Move-in day

So, I'm a little confused about move-in day. Do you get your ID card first and then go to your dorm or do you go to your dorm first and then get your ID? I would really like to get to my dorm as soon as possible.
Thanks!

Another thing, do you get your keys to your dorm once you go into the building, or do you get your keys when you get your ID? Do you need the keys to move-in to your dorm room?

I think I read somewhere that you move into your dorm first then go to the student check in at Barton Hall to get your Cornell ID afterwards if you have the 8-11 or the 11-2 move in time. If you have the 2-5 move in time then you do the opposite and get your card first. I’m pretty sure you don’t get keys and that your ID card is also swipe card that lets you in your dorm.

Your ID gives you access to your dorm building, however, you still will need to pick up keys for the individual dorm room.

You’ll need to get your keys from one of two service centers on North Campus.

From what I remember, you go to your dorm first for your room key. What I did was go to my dorm first and while my parents did a bit of unpacking for me, I went to Barton to get my ID. While it’s true your ID is normally necessary to get into the dorms, on move-in day all the doors should be unlocked. There are also student volunteers helping to move freshman in. I suppose the process could have changed since my freshman year a few years ago and from when I myself was one of those student volunteers the next year…

Last year students were able to get their keys and move the stuff into the room and then go and get their ID’s probably because parents need to help students unload cars so that they can move the car to a visitor lot. It’s a pretty streamlined process.

Thank you all so much! That cleared it up :)

Another question: Do you drive to your dorm building? Or is there some meeting place before they let you go to your dorm building? Thanks! Sorry for asking so much :)

Nope. People drive up to their respective dorms and unload from a specific area depending on the building. There will be signs around the campus.

P.S.: You can enter campus by avoiding Collegetown and instead driving up the west side of campus (from the bottom of University Ave.). You would be approaching North Campus from the opposite direction and thus dodge the ridiculous traffic congestion.

You can also drive up 13/34 N (N Meadow) to Triphammer Road turn right and then left at Jessup and then follow the signs to Cornell and then enter North Campus that way.

What about people who are assigned late afternoon move in time? Housing assigns time slots bases on the first letter of your last name, do me D got 2-5 pm time slot, which I think us very inconvenient.
Any advice?

Sorry for the typos - its harder to type on the phone :(

Don’t head to campus until that time. If you folks are in the area from the morning, you’ll have to find something to do. Maybe go dine, or check out the lake and waterfalls nearby.

It has been 5 years…Will we be able to get into the room (not to move in) before appointed time? We would like to to do some cleaning before hand, check out the layout to see what our kid would need from BBB.

NewStudentMom, your D can get her ID before the move-in time. We had the 2-5 pm time and IIRC we actually drove up at around 1:30 and that was fine because there was no one left from the earlier slot at that point.

Oldfort, I think they told us “no” on getting into the room ahead of time - I don’t think they will give the student their key before their time slot. But if the roommate has an earlier time slot, you could just walk in and meet them.

We moved his stuff up early in the time slot and then went to pick up his pre-ordered fridge from Walmart, and a few other things (had a bed board cut at Lowe’s I think) and went back to the room with that stuff, helped him unpack, and so on. He wanted to eat in the dorm with the other students, so we left and ate off-campus without him, then met him again the next morning for Convocation and other orientation events that included parents.

From what I observed last year about the check-in procedure, the answer is “no” to getting the key ahead but going ahead of time if the roommate is there is a good one. The move-in was seamless except the door to the room would not shut, but maintenance was there right away to fix it. (Guess we could have gotten there early after all!)

My daughter just moved onto West on Tuesday for Orientation and I can see that it is going to be a nightmare to move in on Friday - no wonder they open it up all weekend to move in. There is no place to park near the dorm, except a few handicapped spaces and supposedly they will ticket you.

Thanks for the info. We may just swing by in the morning to see if the door is open. We are staying on campus, so we could walk there.

It looks like it is going to be kind of cool, so it’ll be nice for move in. We have a list of restaurants to go back to, but most of them do not take reservations. Ugh.

Good luck with the move in.

Threat of thunderstorms in AM (biggest threat between 9 & noon)

There is always a possibility of rain, snow, shower, even when it is the sunniest day. It is part of Ithaca charm.
