Oh and whats the throwdown and do i have to go?

Move-in is definitely quite hectic. You will see a mix of students, parents, siblings, move-in crew volunteers, RAs, and others all running around. Cars will be at a stand still waiting to drop students off with their luggage. At peak times, the ramps to the various campuses off of Route 18 can actually back up. It’s crazy and pretty surreal as a freshman. Consider it a sort of rite of passage. Once you get all your belongings to your room and say goodbye to whoever brought you, it’s usually a good time to see who else on your floor has moved in, try to make some friends. Keep an open mind when you meet people. Looking back, some of my best friends I still have I met on move-in day, others that I met I don’t even see anymore.

We didn’t have throwdown last year because of Hurricane Irene, but I imagine it is similar to the field days you may have had back in middle/high school. No clue as to whether or not it is mandatory, but there isn’t exactly much else to do so you might as well. The first few days before classes are the only time you are going to be completely free from school work, so take advantage of them.

Throwdown is like a field day kind of thing where your building faces other buildings in your area for throwdown champion. Usually you will do events like dodgeball, van pulling, and etc. Very fun and you meet some cool people. Its like an ice breaker.

Move in will be crazy, the earlier you move in the better so you wont have to deal with sitting in your car for 45 mins while you slowly move up to the unloading area. If you move in early you can unpack with your family and then go out and eat with them on college ave or somewhere. I wouldn’t recommend the dining hall yet because before classes start they tend to have weak food selections.

If you get there before 8am, will they allow you to move in?

When is move-in time? I would plan on getting there 1/2 hour early. Most people will arrive later.

if you want to beat the rush and lines, you should try to be there 30 mins after they start letting you move in. For example Best Hall is aug 30 9am, you should be there by 9:30 if you dont want to wait on line. Being there before 9 or around 9 on the dot will be no use to you.

Things happen so you should let housing/move in crew to get at least a 15 min grace period to get things rolling.

Is there a way I can move in any earlier than the move in date? I know students are given an opportunity at the end of the year to fill out the Early Move In form, but I didn’t hear about it until very recently.

I understand that the Move-In crew cannot accomodate my moving in; I’m just wondering if I go to Housing and ask for the key to my room, would I still be able to move in ealier.

My move in time is 8:30am but it says I can get the key at 8am.

email them oncampus@rci.rutgers.edu and ask, it is very late. They sent out the early arrival email on friday if you were eligible or not.

Thank you. I guess I’d give it a shot since I have nothing to lose.
