Move In Day

So my son decided not to do FYSOP because he will have been away all summer working at a camp and wanted and needed a week home before he heads to BU. Can anybody give me some insight in how BU organizes move in day. We chose to move in on August 31st. We’re local so that we can arrive right at 9:00 am. Is it worth being ready to move in at the start? I went to BU years ago and I remember loading laundry carts with stuff and having everything arrive to my dorm but I don’t remember how they organized parking as well as the actual move in day process. Can anybody give me some insight regarding move in day- particularly at Warren Towers. So far we have been impressed by how BU has organized the re-visit days and orientation and hope that move-in day will be as organized especially since they have been going through this process for so many years.

At my son’s orientation, they told us that it will be very smooth. We will be guided where to pull up, students will unload our car into a cart. Our kid will sign in and get his key. They’ll take the carts up to the room while we park somewhere close by, as directed. After we say good bye, Dean Elmore said the parents can go to the BU Pub between 2 and 4.

Basically in Warren you’ll be directed to park under the dorm, where there will be students waiting to direct you and give you carts. Then you head upstairs to floor 4 (the lobby) and will check in and be able to head upstairs to his room.

Beware, no matter what time you will move in, you will probably have to wait for the elevator for a while. It’s a pretty smooth process, though!

They will probably send an email out when it gets closer to the date.

Does anyone know the procedure for shipping to the dorm in advance? we will be flying (too far to drive) but don’t want to being everything on the plane.

ChiMama–I don’t know about shipping, but there’s a Bed, Bath, & Beyond, right near the school. One student was from Georgia, she said she ordered everything at her home store, but had it delivered to the one near BU, and just picked it up (I think she used a taxi).

Does anyone have a clue how move-in will be for FYSOP? I’m a little nervous, my D is in a brownstone, I’m not sure it’ll be open, or if we’ll have anything like help.

From what I remember from moving into my brownstone, your check in will probably be at The Towers (140 Bay State Road) or another surrounding dorm depending on what her street number is. You can check in there, pick up her keys and get a giant yellow cart to help if you want.

Parking might actually be available right in front of her building (it was for me when I moved into one sophomore year). The downside of brownstones are that they don’t have elevators, so you’ll probably have to make several trips up and down the stairs. The upside is there will be fewer people moving in with her, so less traffic!

If parking isn’t available right on the street, you’ll be directed to a nearby lot, where you can take a big yellow cart back from where you checked in.

There will be students on hand to assist you with directions and any questions! If I remember correctly, you’ll get an email soon about this!

Let me know if you have any more questions :)

Re-shipping. You can do the Bed Bath and Beyond program like someone suggested-simply pick out what you want at your home store and they’ll have the exact merchandise waiting for pick up at the nearby store in Boston.

I can’t remember exactly what the procedure is in shipping stuff to the dorms, other than the mailroom gets absolutely innovated with stuff in the beginning of the year, so you might want to check when they start accepting packages. My mom usually ends up sending a few things less than a week after move in and I’ve had no problem. Make sure you include your child’s box number.

Shiningstar91–Yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me if she had to check in at the Towers–initially, we thought she was assigned there, since I guess her mailbox is there. I don’t know how much of a help the yellow carts would be if there isn’t an elevator. Because of the way FYSOP is run–dorms possibly not open until 4pm, first meeting at 5pm–we decided her dad would stay home with the other kids, and I would move her in and get her set up, if necessary.

Move in is very, very smooth. I know that I read it before DD moved in and didn’t quite believe it, but it really is. Here’s how we did it coming from CA. 1. Registered for everything we could think of at the local Bed Bath Beyond. It is different than a regular registry for a wedding or something. They literally remove all items you request from the Fenway BBB, put them in a big box with your kid’s name on it, and put it in a trailer behind the store. When you arrive, they pull your items and you can choose to put them in your cart and pay for them or hand them back with no penalty or paperwork. The only things DD bought or shipped were clothing and computer items. 2. We did NOT rent a car…instead, we rented a condo near the T. airport shuttle in, spent the night. Next morning, T to BBB, taxi back to hotel by 11 for lunch. Afternoon, taxi to Target and back home for dinner. DONE. We then had Sat and Sun to do fun tourist stuff. Monday, we sent our DD by herself on the T to the dorm. In the meantime, we had ordered a airport shuttle van, which came, stuffed her stuff in, took us to the dorm, and unloaded her stuff into the waiting laundry bins. No parking needed, and easy easy. I figure we saved several hundred dollars on a car that we only needed for two errands and drop off. I shipped one box after she got there (not counting care packages) and she used free Amazon Prime a few times for forgotten items.

And you can ship to the dorm, but they don’t want it arriving before the students. I wasted a lot of time on this option, and realized that for a “flyer” it was much cheaper to buy there.
One more clarification of BBB. You don’t pay for any items until you arrive in Boston and decide what you want. I would recommend going to your local store ASAP so they don’t run out of items. We did it in early June because we were so excited, but We have a girl :)

We’ll be driving in (from NH), so I’m not worried about the shipping thing. However, my daughter has a BB&B gift card (graduation present), and a 20% off entire purchase coupon, so I’m hoping she can pick up anything she needs once she’s in Boston.

For those doing BB&B, keep an eye out for coupons–get your kid on their mailing list, get yourself on their mailing list, check magazines like Real Simple.

Amazon Prime works, too–I believe it’s free for 6 months. My only personal objection is, our Amazon account is tied into my credit card, and I’m not sure it’s wise for me to mention that to my daughter…

Sounds like BBB is the way to go! Thank you for all of the extremely helpful suggestions, truly appreciated!
