I recently put down my deposit and starting next fall i will be a freshman at neu. I was curious if anyone knew when move-in day was. Also, is it true that honors students move in earlier than everyone else because I am a member of the honors program?
My son will also be an incoming Honors freshman @nhljohn871. For 2015 freshmen Honors students move in on September 2nd for Honors orientation on September 3rd. Regular Freshmen move in on September 4th and Welcome Week activities officially begin on September 5th and go on for a week. There is a Welcome Week App in addition to the University App. Classes begin on September 9th.
@apccpa I was just wondering where you found out that the Honors move in date was Sept. 2 - I emailed housing a few days ago and was told that move-in date for Honors was some time around Labor Day, but that they had not set the dates yet and would do so around week of June 15. I also downloaded welcome week app but not seeing anything about move in dates there either. thanks!
I called NEU on 4/28/15 @Sapphire50 to ask about orientation and welcome week and got the information. The lady seemed pretty definite in her response told me that wasn’t on the website yet when I asked if could find it on there.
@apccpa Thank you. The email I received from a person in Housing Services was dated April 30. It’s funny how often people get different information from different people in admissions or other services offices at universities.
I always prefer to speak to someone rather than sending emails @sapphire50 as oftentimes I can get more from someone by speaking to them. Wouldn’t hurt to call them to verify. Everyone that I’ve spoken to at NEU has been very friendly and helpful. I believe that I spoke to someone in Admissions.
@apccpa Your info jibes with our experience last year - Exactly one week before classes begin… That being said, I’m pretty sure they didn’t move everyone into IV in just one day (although they have the system down to a science!), so it might be +/- a day either side of that Wed 9/2/15.
All honors freshman move into IV on the same day, but that’s not all of IV. There are also a lot of upperclassmen in the dorm as well who will move in later.
@apccpa So I did call and speak to somebody in the Honors office today and he told me that they had not set the dates yet. He said that it tends to be the week before classes start, so it’s probably likely that your information that it will be Wednesday Sept. 2 is correct but he could not be 100% certain. He said the date would be set in mid-June.
“Move–in for International students who have a residence hall assignment will take place on Monday, August 31” (i’m also honors so it could be so for honors as well.) it says so when you register for your orientation session on the myneu website. but i am curious when the rest of the students will be moving in…
@Sapphire50 I recently found that there is a special Parent website with a phone number, email and blog for parents to get information. Another great service from NEU that isn’t available at most public universities. They can answer any and all questions. They confirmed the 9/2/15 move-in day for Honors and that would be staggered starting on 9/4/15 for the non-Honors students. Dorm assignments will be mailed in early June.
So now that the dates are finalized - I noticed that move-in day is scheduled from 8-5, so that’s a pretty big time frame. How does move-in work, and does any one have any advice to make it as easy as possible?
@julianstanley Move-in may be all day, but typically you’re assigned a specific block of time (It may be 2 hours or 4? I can’t remember.) Move-in, at least in IV, was done really well IMO. There is very clear signage on what to do and communication ahead of time. You pull your car right up next to IV, and the ResLife staff unloads your stuff into a giant rolling bin which they’ll take up to your room as you check-in in the lobby/your parent parks the car. You should have no heavy lifting or anything up stairs. They really do make it easy as possible.
Only tip would be to try to coordinate move-in times with your roommate, if you’re in a double. The rooms, while relatively spacious, can seem cramped when you and your whole family are trying to unpack a dozen suitcases and set everything up. It’s not very fun when your roommate and their whole family is doing the same thing at the same time. You may have a different move in time than the roommate, but if not, try to pick times within (i.e, if the block is 8-12, one can get there at 8 and the other at 10.)
Son received an email to his Husky email address with specifics on move-in date. For honors college/International Village - move in date is Thursday September 3. His time slot is 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. We plan to drive to Boston Wednesay afternoon and spend night in hotel and get to dorm for the 10 a.m. move in time.
Thanks for the update @Sapphire50. My son is also September 3rd so the information that was provided to us was incorrect and we already booked our flights.
