Is there any important information that we need to know about move-in day? (besides what is written in the pamphlets) Also, on the night of move-in day. do we sleep in the dorm or go back to the hotel?
Students sleep in the dorm.
However quick you think the move in crew will get your stuff our of your car and into your dorm room - multiply that by 10.
It was crazy - literally minutes from pulling up to the dorm we had every single box in the room.
Vanderbilt’s move in is top notch.
Label EVERYTHING with your room number!
As someone who did move crew a will do move crew I can tell you that having a luggage tag with your room number on it helps us out SO much, we don’t have to remember where to take your stuff. Secondly, let us get all of your stuff in your room BEFORE you start crowding around it. As eager as people are to see their room we can get in and out quicker and give you more time in the room if things go smoothly. Other than that just be prepared for a lot of cheering and yelling and people lugging stuff up stairs for you… also, bring a screw driver if you are going to be “building” any type of “furniture” (think shelving), so many people asked for one last year.
A rubber mallet is also handy for lofting the beds. There will be one available somewhere on your floor, but if you have your own, you don’t have to hunt for it. Pack scissors someplace handy - you will probably need them while unpacking. And if there is anything in your car that you DON’T want Move Crew to move, tell them quickly (before they unload your spare tire and lug it up to your room…)
Feel free to send your parents out for a walk while you are trying to unpack and getting to know your roommate and hallmates. Parents want to help, but sometimes you need your space.
I wish I could see the training that the move crew goes through, because sometimes it seems like they’re using magic or something. On my move in day, I was the first to leave the car and go up to my room. By the time I got there, all of my stuff was already on my bed. I didn’t even comprehend what had happened for like 10 seconds. To this day, I still don’t understand how they got to my room before me when I left first.
They do not train us at all. And by that I mean we go there the evening before to pick up T-shirts and then we get they they tell us not to get drunk that night because being hungover would not be a good idea. Then we just get up early and help everyone move. There is no magic, it is just teamwork.
