Move in day tips? How does it work, how fast are the lines? What time should we get there? Minor Hall.
we moved in to Burns in '14. Get there by 830, bring a dolly in case they run out of the big laundry bins. Pack folding clothes in their underbed storage units before when you are packing the car, saves a ton of time as some clothes are going in there anyway. Be one of the first in line by the door. Not sure if you are allowed to unload on the sidewalk anymore first. It is going to be humid. Show your kid how the washers work, they don’t need quarters as they can use their card to operate them. Bring a rubber doorstop as the room doors close automatically and you have to constantly knock on them when you come back up with another load. We are moving my 2nd kid into Crosby Thursday.
Son moved into RH2 last year - tip: get the buggy early. There was a line outside RH2 for the students to get their room keys and a line outside RH1 to get a buggy (you need a drivers license). Have someone from your family get in line for a buggy which will make move-in exponentially better. No back aches and minimal trips up and down stairs!
There are only 2 elevators in RH2 so be prepared to wait in line (probably same in most dorms).
Eat a good breakfast and have some water available as it is a lot of moving and you will work/walk up a sweat. Wear tennis shoes (or something very comfortable) because unless you are there first be prepared to walk from your car while carrying all their stuff -hence the need for the buggy.
Wal-Mart gets crazy busy in the around lunch as everyone goes there after they move into their room.
If not in a rush, consider checking into the dorm in the late afternoon to let the lines dwindle down and then more buggies are available too. Also go to Wal-Mart the night before for food, shower curtains, rugs, storage containers, school supplies - this way you can get first choice of items and you can use the buggy to bring up your purchases.
Best of luck to all the parents moving in their first college student!
