Move in day

hello everyone. i have a quick question. my dad works abroad. he will not be home on the scheduled move in day, but he will be home the next day. he really doesn’t want to miss out on my first day there. is it possible to not move in on the scheduled move in day? sorry i know i’ve been redundant. any answers would be appreciated.

I believe it's possible to not move in one the scheduled day, perhaps in your case, you would probably move in a day late. It's possible, however New Student Orientation begins on the scheduled first move-in day.

You can stay at The INN and move in whenever you desire. You will have signed your contracts and all you need to do is show up at your convenience. Good Luck

read: YOUR first day there, not his. I'm sorry but once I'm all unloaded I'm giving my parents the goodbye and saying hello to life as an independent college student. Do you really want to be the kid dragging along his parents the entire first day?

Coffeeaddict, it may surprise you, but there are a LOT of parents that stick around for a few days, and it's quite alright. My parents stayed in Philly for about 4 days after moving me in, and I really didn't see them all that much. I was certainly not dragging them along anywhere, they respected that I had lots of stuff to do during NSO and that I was officially in college... I enjoyed having them there for that long.

I personally totally agree with coffeeadict (lol, maybe ppl have this opinion after drinking too much coffee)

Well then I'm glad we have all of these strong opinions from people who have never actually experienced what they're trying to advise others on.

To answer the question--yes, it is entirely possible to move in the day after the official move-in day. Do you know what dorm you're assigned to? The only ease in moving in on the official day is that certain streets are closed off so parking and unloading is less of a hassle (esp. true for the Quad). However, move in day has its own hassles of vying for carts, lines for guest passes for your parents etc; so the day after move-in day, parking may be an issue but those other things will be easier.

As for whether you should move in a day later, do whatever you feel is right for you and your family. You only move in once in your life as a frosh and its understandable that your dad wants to be there; so it won't harm you to wait one day. I think the NSO activities are kind of a joke and missing a day, even if its a day of 'mandatory' activities is not going to matter. If you really don't want to miss any of NSO, you can work it out; maybe come a day early and stay at a hotel, attend that days NSO, and then have your parents come the next day with your stuff for move-in. You can certainly work something out.

My flight lands at PHL at around 7:30p which means that I'll only be able to reach my assigned residence hall at about 9:00p. Will I be allowed to move-in that day? What are the front desk/reception hours at the residence halls?

Yes. You're coming from the airport so at best you'll have a few suitcases and maybe some other stuff that you checked. It'll be no problem to grab a cart and haul all your stuff to your room--even if it is after the official move in hours. Lived at penn for years (undergrad and grad) and I don't even know what the official move in hours are--because everything runs on a college student schedule so people move in and out at all hours with no hassles; you should see what move out looks like--kids hauling their stuff out at 1 am the night after their last final.

The only thing that I can think of that would be a hassle outside of the official move in hours would be a car--because you would have to follow parking rules and would not necessarily be allowed to leave your car someplace convenient. But if you're flying, that shouldn't matter to you.

cool....tx.....but how do I get my room keys if front desk is closed by the time I reach the residence hall?

The front desk will be staffed at 9 pm on move-in day--with students or perhaps full time employees on overtime for that day, these people will be able to give you the keys. 9 pm is really early in the college world. I believe most, if not all, front desks are staffed 24 hrs (that's not to say that the guard would be allowed to give you your keys at 2 am--but as long as the staff is a student/regular employee, which is should be until at least 11 pm or so, you're fine).
