for the bigger buildings, it definitely sucks...I helped a friend move in, and we carried her stuff up to the 5th floor, which wasn't that bad. I got lucky though...horray for Goddard being tiny.

im flying from istanbul, turkey but since i have a house over there i already sent one luggages full of winter clothing, so ill be coming with two luggages and one can stay again at home to be brought later that day- or if thats still impossible later that week!

if i will be there earlier than my roommate how do I choose which bed - desk is better for me? Im in U hall! like the bed next to the window, is it too cold during winter or the bed which is closer to the door- is it too noisy that you cannot sleep till noon? etc????

I have the same question about flying there.

Do we ship stuff at? If we give the company who is shipping our packages a date/time will they just pull up right in front of the building, unload our packages on time, and go?

That seems the best option for me, but I need some input as to the best way to go. (I'm from TX so I don't really want to drive...)

miche it might not be fair but that's the way it works! :)

If you're shipping stuff, you can't have it arrive before you do. NYU will not accept it if you haven't already moved in.

Matth, I wasn't planning to ship the stuff before I arrived...I was planning on having it ship the morning I arrive so that as I'm moving in it will get there.

lindsey, you'd have to do it for the Monday. Deliveries don't happen on Sundays and even if they did, there's no way that the dorm wants deliveries arriving when they're trying to move in thousands of freshmen.

I wasn't aware of that. I think I can live until the next w/o some of my stuff. Thanks for the fyi.

Still, though, shipping it up on Monday? Recommended or not?

yea...bring some clothes....ur computer and necessary bed and bath essentials....they take precedence....

definitely correct me if i'm wrong, but i heard (from someone and i dont know how credible he/she is) but they said that streets/blocks will be closed off on move-in day. so basically, does it means cars can't go through, and if thats the case, wouldnt trucks (delivering things) be unable to enter and deliver said things?

i havent heard of any deliveries on sunday...

Lindsey, bring the essentials that you'll need for the first night. Monday delivery should be fine.

miche, they don't close down the streets technically but with all the cars unloading, they are effectively closed. However, fed-ex and UPS, etc. do not deliver on Sundays so it doesn't matter!

thanks (10char)

no one i know delivers on sunday....so like it has already been stated: bring the essentials...the stuff you ABSOLUTELY NEED EVERY DAY...that's what you bring for the first 2 days

I read on cc that move in day around Washington Square is a nightmare...but I can't see any way to avoid that. Move-in day at any school (we've done it twice already) is no picnic, but in NY, with congestion and traffic, the best bet is to have lots of water and a good attitude. If each student can get 2 people to help (parents, friends, relatives, etc...) then one can park the car, one can keep an eye on all the "stuff" sitting out on the street, and the other can run up and down stairs. If you're lucky enough to know someone else in NY or bring another person with you, he can help bringing your stuff upstairs.

But my question regards University Hall housing...Since University Hall is not around Washington Square, are there the same moving-in issues for this location? During one of the orientations, we were told that the NY police are helpful on move-in day around Washington square...parking limits are banned, etc... What about on 14th street, where the NY dorm (i.e. U hall) is one of the only NY buildings on the street? Does anyone have any tips or ideas for mvoing into U-Hall?

u-hall is right next to palladium, and i believe there might be another dorm on that street? its an incredibly busy street and dorms are fairly big, so
I'm interested in knowing how that works out

ohhh this is going to be sooo fun :)

kyang (or anyone who may know) - so is move-in day for goddard a lot easier? i plan on getting there at around 8 - 8:30 (we're staying in a hotel for a couple days before because my mom's never been to new york), will it be significantly less crowded than the other freshman dorms? these horror stories are starting to get to me lol

^I know that Goddard is a smaller dorm, so it should be easier to get move into... I'm moving into Goddard, too, so I'm hoping that it's not too bad.

oh yeah...they tell you to split up according to last names or something...forget that for goddard. Just get there whenever you can--there's no line, you can use the elevator, they even have some big bins if necessary...it's so easy, and not a hassle at all...one of the many terrific (and not scary or antisocial) things about goddard

I am just taking my essentials in one bag, and all my stuffs will be delivered by Fedex or USPS on Monday or Tuesday :) (well the class doesn't even start until the next week!)
