move-in day!

how did everybody's move-in day go?

HOT!!! It also took much longer than expected -- but that was just fine w/ us ;-) We parked, brought everything to the room while our d. registered, and then went to move the car. THEN all the student helpers came out to help the next cars. Didn't time that one right! She fortunately did not forget too much, and the move went smoothly.

We went to pick up her pre-order books. She didn't have many. In fact, only 4 books were listed, since 2 of her courses are architecture and require tools and programs instead of books. Total cost was about $200 (NOT including all the architecture equipment and programs which came to around $1000 extra!!!). We thought that a small book fee was fair after that, but when we opened the box, we discovered that the 4 books were very small paper-backs (more like journals). $200!!!!!! Yeicks.

I am constantly impressed w/ the friendly campus. I know it was move-in day, but everyone, incl. parents, students, & staff was smiling, helpful, courteous, etc. I've never been on campus when someone doesn't hold the door or ask if you need help or directions.

[sigh] I hope this is me next year. Am I bad for wishing that?
So kj - How did the first night go? Did you hear from her? Or is it tonight? Did you cry?

How exciting for you all!!!

Hope we hear more tales from parents - I am SOOOO living vicariously through all of you - LOL!!!

Our move-in day went well enough. Lots of hard work. Unfortunately, we couldn't convince any of the Miami students to help us carry D's stuff up 3 flights of stairs. Her roommate had a whole swarm of folks helping her, and when we asked them if they would help us, they said sure, and followed us down 2 flights of stairs, then disappeared. Oh well. :) Fortunately, D is a light traveller, and didn't have nearly as much as many people. She even has some empty drawers!

We had to make a WalMart run for a few things we accidentally left behind. The place was mobbed!

Her room is HUGE! So much for the website, which gave her room dimensions as 11'+ by 9'+ -- her room was more like 12 by 18! She was thrilled. Website was also wrong about the built-in furniture in Emerson - they must have updated.

We were all so glad she is in an A/C'd dorm - it was so hot. I think we left her feeling a bit overwhelmed. I know she is eager for classes to start, so she can see how it is all going to work out. Her schedule is packed, and she has several classes back to back in different buildings, which is making her nervous.

Her roommate seems very nice, and she has also met others from her hall. She has her orchestra audition on Monday, and has been hiding in the basement of the PAC for several hours every day to practice. How nice that the practice rooms are also air-conditioned!!! I felt really sorry for the folks in the marching band, practicing outside. They sure are dedicated.

It was sad leaving her behind. Perhaps I would have cried, except I was too busy helping her dad hold it together! He didn't react like that when the boys left.
