Moved DS into his dorm today. Saw lots of snarled traffic on our drive into campus, and U Hauls everywhere. The move in was very well organized. A parking lot near the dorm was used to unload belongings into large, wheeled carts and movers brought them to the dorm entrance. Another team of movers brought your carts up a series of ramps into the dorm lobby. Once checked in, an escort brought you down to your room. It was a very efficient operation.

There was one building, across from the parking lot, where students were sitting on the sidewalk with all their belongings. I can only guess that since this was not a traditional dorm, but an older, smaller apartment type of building, that the students had to wait their turn to enter. Lucky for them it was a beautiful day.

Everywhere you walked was the sound of live music and the smell of grilled food. There are all kinds of fun things scheduled for the next couple of days and DS and his new roomie couldnt wait to meet up with friends from home who are also attending NEU and start exploring. It was a good day. :)

Glad to hear it. Yeah, my DS is moving into his dorm tomorrow and it is an older, smaller apartment type building so it will definitely be a process compared to last year. Lucky for me, his Uncle is going to have to deal with it.

We moved our son into Kerr on Thursday! The move in was even easier than MSB described. I guess we were lucky in arriving a little ahead of the crowd. Kerr has one very small very slow elevator and narrow halls (6 floors), but we only had a short wait before taking our 2 trips up to my son's room. A little later in the day the line was out to the street and some impatient folks were dragging bins up the very narrow stairs. Son's room is very nice - standard dorm room but fresh paint, carpet and nearly new furniture. Son's roommate is a nice kid; I think they will get along fine. Weather was great. The area is amazing! Wife and I walked through the Fen (been warned not to go at night, but it is really nice during the day) there is an incredible rose garden over there. Walked around the museum of fine arts (almost next door to the dorm) and over to the Christian Science center and watched little kids play in the fountain. I think my son made a wonderful choice to attend Northeastern and I can't imagine him at one of the many isolated small LACs we dragged him around to last year.

Of course now we are home for the holiday weekend wondering what the point is of splitting up the family before the holiday when classes don't start for a week..... oh well, he is enjoying himself.

NJRes...
That's funny about your feeling DS had to move in really early. Mine is unhappy that he can't move in until tomorrow. Says he has to go catch up with all his friends, get a new id to replace the one in his wallet that was stolen over the summer, buy books, get his stuff situated, etc. etc.
They really do use that week to get the incoming freshmen acclimated.
Let me emphasize re: the Fens. It is not okay to go there at night and particularly for the female students. Last year I was at an off campus apartment in the evening. DS and I called for a cab. The apartment owner told us not to wait downstairs in the foyer or outside his apartment but to stay put until the cab called the intercom for his apartment.
The campus police and security people really strice to get this information into the kids heads and they are all pretty smart about it so no need for parents to worry though.

Son is in Stetson. Room is small but clean and has a very nice view over an interior courtyard. My only complaint is that, even though this is a double, there is only one closet. I don't think the boys care. Son is more impressed that a dining hall is right in his building.

I love, love, love that Fine Arts is right next door. If I was at Northeastern I'd be in there all the time. My DS - probably not.

NJres, nice photos. Where is that bloomin' stairway?

Moved DS into university-leased housing in Douglass Park on Sunday with his 3 roommates. Carpets were filthy and scheduled to be cleaned after move-in because there was only 48 hours between those moving out from summer and those moving in from fall. Parking was in Columbus garage with the rolling NU gray carts to push 4 blocks to DP. Long lines at the elevator in the garage and DP bldg if you arrived late. Very different setup from Stetson last year. Cafeterias too far to commit to a meal plan so DS will wing it with his roommates in their kitchen. (He only ate 5-8 meals on his 15 meal plan last year anyway when the cafe was in the same building -- so the meal plan was pretty much a waste.)

creasemonkey
my son is on what is called the profiler plan where you can buy meals for a flat price and they only expire at the end of the year. If the grocery thing doesn't work out, you might want to look into the profiler plan. They don't really advertise it from what I found. An upperclassman told him about it.

ebeeeee
thanks for the advice - definitely may be worth looking into that option!
are you using Jet Blue for your son? (DS favors JB for returning to NCal on his holiday breaks.)

JetBlue doesn't "do" our area. Unfortunately. We use AA flyer points and sometimes Southwest. Southwest flies out of CT. near my parents so fall and summer flights are from CT, as he stores stuff at their house over the summer. He only comes home for Christmas. Has a good group of friends and usually has offers for Thanksgiving and Easter (luckily for me).
