Move in Day?

When can you move into the dorms?

august 22nd i believe...right?

I think it's the 21st

It's officially set as August 21st. However, last school year, they had two move-in days. Unit 1 moved in on a Saturday and all the other residence halls moved in on a Sunday.

is there a formal orientation around that time?

CalSO is your formal academic orientation and others. Welcome Week has Getting Your Bearings for those who did not attend CalSO.

This is what I received back when I emailed the Unit 1 Coordinator or something...

Dear _____,
Welcome to Cal!
You are to be commended for such foresight in planning your adventure 3 months from now, just as your H.S. senior year leads into your last summer! It is wise to plan for the big day in August, so you can enjoy yourself when you arrive.

On our end, school closed just a week ago and we are in our summer transition, preparing to host over 5000 Cal Student Orientation admittees and hundreds of other guests who will attend conferences and tour the campus. Fall seems a long way off, and plans for opening weekend are still being finalized.

What I can tell you is that the weekend of August 20-21 is slated as our Fall Opening. Our New Student Services and Residence Hall Assignments Office will be in contact soon about the full plan for that weekend.
Look for more info at:

Look forward to meeting you when you arrive!
warmly,
Jonathan Winters
Unit 1 Facilities Manager

It makes sense that they're still wondering what to do. They should let you know in July or late June.

I won't be able to get up to Cal until Aug. 22 at the earliest... Does that affect when I get to move in and will I be missing a huge event since I won't be up there that weekend?

same here, can't get there before that.

It's just moving in...perhaps if you contact them it would help. BTW, school starts that Monday after, so getting up to CAL ASAP to get things in order before classes start the day after would be recommended I think.

Classes dont start until the 29th, not the 22nd. If you get there the 22nd, you'll have plenty of time to get adjusted before class starts, although I dont know what you'll be missing on the 21st.

Yeah, it should say the week after, not day after. "Monday after" was also poorly worded. Monday of the following week is better.

August 21st is actually moving your stuff in, meeting your roommate etc.

They will have "Getting your Bearings" for those who did not come to CalSO throughout the week. On that week, you will also be registering your computers so you can get online. That's during the week.

The 21st is just moving in as I said.

Again, I suggest contacting housing and letting them know about your situation. For miqdad, you're coming in from Pakistan which obviously has more logistics involved in terms of flight transfers, your luggage, etc.

This is what they did last year on move-in day:

nice nice nice.......i get to move in early =D

do you have the schedule for Unit 1?

That was the schedule for last year!!!

So don't worry about it. That's how they did it last year...they might do it differerntly this year. The schedule for Unit 1 last year is on that website.

I doubt it's very formal. You just go with the flow. Get your room all set up then go out for your free dinner.

Wow, you guys get it pretty posh. When I was going for the first time, I never got a letter welcoming me to Cal other than my admittance, and when we got our dorms -- it was like: "Here's the key to your skankhole, don't bother us anymore." ..and it pretty much was an insane free-for-all from there. Heh. Aaah, memories, but it was all in good fun.

My advice for Move-In Day? Take as little as possible. Like a week's worth of clothes and a months linens. (For me, that's two sets of bedding and two towels -- but for others, it might be 3-4 of each.) Coordinate with your roomies ahead of time and get ot know and get a feel for them. It'll go a lot easier. Buy everything OTHER than the essentials up there, because you have VERY little in the way of space.
