You’re right in that each college has its own thing

It should be a week before first day of lecture. I believe they want you to come in the first day just to handle the logistics, signing of the papers, key pickups, etc., but you can take however long you need to move in.

Usually followed by some kind of college barbecue of some sort followed by welcome week (campus dances, free food, trips to costco/walmart, midnight kayaking, etc.).

“When can I move in?
Your contract begins Saturday, September 19, 2009, but all information pertaining to move-in will be included in the welcome letter scheduled to be mailed late August/early September.”

Some colleges (warren, sixth, revelle, have a move-in-day, and then an orientation, which is conveniently followed by welcome week), while the others have orientation during the summer and then you get assigned a move-in-day (there is not only one move-in-day for all students in a college) in late september (which is followed by welcome week).
