Does anybody know when it is?

There are actually two move in days for Res Halls, usually the last Wednesday and Thursday of August. Typically one half of each dorm is scheduled for each day- by House. There is no scheduled time- you will be able to arrive any time after 8:00 am until perhaps 5:00 pm or so on your day. Arriving later in the afternoon has advantages- most are already there. Those working for Res Halls- food service and the “Badger Buddies” (who help students with move in)- arrive a few days earlier. Foreign students will also have a way of staying after their August orientation as well. You will get a parking permit for about one hour to park near your dorm and there are wheeled laundry carts to fill and move stuff with. After that your parents can park in a distant on campus lot if they want to, or just leave. Only the student can pick up the room key from the Hall desk (some desks are in a different but close building- see website). A mandatory(?), useful House meeting is scheduled around suppertime on the scheduled move in day so do not plan on being with your parents into the evening. Welcome Week activities follow. Do check your dorm’s site on the Reds Halls site this summer for information about your Housefellow (the UW resident assistant).

Sometime a month or so before then you will get a packet mailed with directions, parking permit, etc. They have big signs on campus directing people to their proper move in parking lots. In the past the Hall desks have had sheafs of paper with directions to both eastside and westside stores (eg Target, Walmart, Home Depot)- some large grocery/dept etc choices. The Isthmus Annual Manual is also available around dorms and close to campus stores- a good source of restaurants and maps along with everything else for people new to the city- I kept one to use for future trips when we wanted to take son out for lunch.

Did two dorm move ins with son. It is also interesting how decades old campus knowledge stays with alumni- they haven’t moved any buildings except Ogg… By this time next year you will be familiar with all of the lingo, places, schedules… and a lot of it will stay with you forever.

August 27th

Note- TWO days for move in.
