So, I am basically copying the thread from College Life to here because it is a completely different situation...

Seeing as the majority on CC is American, I read a lot about students' (huge) lists of what to bring to their dorm. But this situation is so different for intl students as we obviously will not bring dressers and a mini fridge or TV :D

For those of you who are already in college, what have you guys taken with you and did you need to buy certain furniture after arrival? What was already waiting for you when you got to your room?

I only brought clothes, shoes and a few books; the rest I bought when I got there. If you’re living in a dorm you shouldn’t need any furniture and I don’t know about yours, but my dorm didn’t allow bought furniture at all. I got a plastic cart thing from Target to store my food under my bed, a laundry bag from ikea and that’s it! :)

Same here. I brought clothes and a few personal items, and bought just about anything else.

The college provided: bed with mattress, drawers (built into the bed), desk, desk chair, closet, lamp. Shared with other students on my hall: TV, fridge, microwave, vacuum cleaner, broom.

I bought: bedding, a fan, a laundry hamper, trash cans, cloth hangers, and other small things. In my junior year I invested into a bookshelf, but I would have not had space for it in my freshmen double. I didn’t buy any other furniture.

Oh wow, so I guess you get almost everything you need! Which now is confusing to know after all I read about what some American students bring with them when they move… but I guess we don’t have that luxury :)

Most importantly: Bring bedding!! Yes, you can buy when you get here. But, you probably won’t have access to a mall immediately, and you will need to sleep!!

Also, bring clothes! Nothing too drastic, as much as your luggage weight restrictions allow I guess. You can always buy clothes here.

You’ll have a bed, a wardrobe/dresser, desk, book shelf - all dorms are different. Mine had 2 beds (weird for a single room), 2 dressers, a sink/vanity area, a medicine cabinet, a desk and a walk-in closet.

I brought my sheets, comforter, etc. I bought a pillow here. I came with my clothes, but had to buy more clothes cos it was winter and very very cold. I came with electronic appliances and I got ****ed cos I realized that the US has different outlets lol.

@femiluv: most electronics like laptops let you swap out the end cable on the adapter for one that’s compatible with US plugs. that cable itself should cost you no more than 5 bucks max.

I ordered bedding online and had it shipped to my college address, so it was waiting for me when I got there. Same with towels. (I brought one, but I didn’t want to waste suitcase space with a stack of towels when I could easily buy a new set for $10.)

Bigger universities might sell bedding and other first-year essentials in the college bookstore. I know Penn does.

If you are on any sort of medication, find out to what extend you can bring that medication with you. The quantity of prescription drugs you are allowed to bring is strictly limited, and you might need a note from a physician and an English package insert from the pharmaceutical company.
