Move in day

A rookie with another rookie question. Just how crazy is move in day? We plan on arriving around 10:30 - are there times that slower, better, easier?

Which dorm? That could make all the difference, based on parking.

Son is in Dardick, arriving around 2pm. Any suggestions?

Dardick should be fine, since there’s a parking lot right outside of it (same for lien).

Parking will be difficult in that lot, but (hopefully) not impossible.

No matter what, everything will probably take a lot of time. Make the best of it, don’t claim a bed before your roommate arrives, and bask in the glory of orientation week programming!!

S will be in Rutledge

What about Park?
I can’t move in before 2 because I’ll have the ILP get-together in the morning.
Will I be able to get everything in before 5?

kxjohnson- the biggest hurdle with rutledge is that it’s a traditional dorm. Meaning no elevator.

Park will be difficult because of where it’s located- not near either of the two parking lots really.

Other than that, in general it’s best to get there early. But it’s no big deal if you can’t get there until 2. As tumbletiger said, just make the best of what you’ve got.

How about Umrath parking? And whats bad about choosing a bed before your roommate, I want to get there aroud 830 in order to pick my bed and get out so I can go dorm shopping.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with calling dibs on a bed, especially if you get there several hours before your roommate does.

If you’re concerned about it, mention to your roommate that you’re just going to grab a bed. It really doesn’t make all that much of a difference.

Is it true that Dardick beds have memory foam mattresses?

The only dorms that get these temperpedic beds are the traditional dorms (Lee, Beau, and Ruby) and Umrath because it’s a new dorm. I would assume that Dardick does not get these beds because it’s a modern dorm that wasn’t built this year. However, one of my friends swore he saw temperpedic bedding in Eliot A (yes, the freshman dorm) and Eliot A is not a new modern, so I’m not really sure about that situation. When I stayed at Park over the summer, it definitely did not have the special bedding.

According to my RA, Dardick does have the tempur pedic mattresses. I’m not sure whether this mean other “old” moderns will have them or not, but I’m fairly certain Dardick does.

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE THE PARENT OF AN INCOMING FRESHMAN (it’ll ruin the surprise):

I loved how at convocation the Ruby freshmen broke into their spirit cheer with “TEM-PUR-PED-IC *::clap-clap-clapclapclap:: *TEM-PUR-PED-IC ::clap-clap-clapclapclap::”

Ah, good times, good times…

Remember that even though there is a designated “move-in” day, that doesn’t mean you have to be all done and settled by the time you go to bed that night! Take time (couple days, a week) to live in your room for a bit and adjust, allow yourself to move things around a bit before finally deeming yourself “moved in”.

^Yeah what he said. Classes only start on the Tuesday so in general move-in is typically over on Monday. I know my parents hung around till the day before classes start helping me with move-in, unpacking, picking up things you need. Upperclassmen will arrive on the weekend I believe, so the campus will be a bit busier then, but freshmen have thursday-monday to unpack and get ready for 1st day of classes.

I talked to a lady at the Office of Residential Life, and she said that Lien has Tempur-Pedic mattresses too. They just added them this summer, apparently. Maybe all the dorms are getting them?

If they’ve given them to Dardick and Lien (not fair!), then they must be giving them to all dorms.

Are coffee makers allowed in dorms? Will one mini fridge be enough for both occupants or should each have his own?

Coffee makers are fine…the fridge depends on the people. One can be enough for three people, or not enough for two…it all depends on how much each person uses, what the arrangements are, etc.
