Move in Days..........

We started discussing this on the Zell Miller scholarship thread. Anyone more tips for freshman parents and students.

yes i have a s that pretty much thinks if his roommate has a tv and xbox, and he has a ps3 there is nothing else to discuss. Either mom can handle it or he will do without. So what do we need to get for small room in meyers- does anyone recommend futon. The room we toured did not have this but had desks under lofted beds. So if we bring futon will there be any room for desks? also what about rugs?

D will be in Reed and they are lofting beds with futon underneath and will have a rug too…but that’s girls for you. Her roommate is planning all the stuff because if left up to my D,all she would have would be a TV.

My moving experience is with Creswell. Get there early and take your time. They have carts for you to use. You might have to wait for one. Try to keep everything as compact as possible. Maybe if it’s easier, pack what you really really need first then go home after the first or second week to get more stuff. I would suggest buying any cables you need (TV, internet, etc) before you get to Athens because the stores will be sold out.

My roommate and I had our own mini fridges that we hid underneath our built-in desk. We lofted both our beds. Under one was a futon (which my roomy bought on our own) and under the second was the TV and another small chair. We put the microwave near the window ledge.

A futon can make life a little more comfortable if your S is willing to tolerate a little less walking space. AFAIK the only way to fit a futon into the smaller rooms in Myers is to loft both beds, put the futon under one (maybe facing a TV sitting on top of a refrigerator/desk?), push one desk against the window and the other under the bed – but there’s some flexibility as far as setup goes. Kinda depends on the room layout.

Would definitely recommend a rug. I hated the tile as it felt very institutional. Only suggestion is to get something that is comfortable, easy to vacuum, and cheap. Even though I vacuumed it regularly (i.e. monthly :P), it was nasty and easier to throw out rather than salvage at the end of the year.

My son has already moved in Creswell; he is at Freshman Experience. We went looking for a clip on light for the lofted bed and a tall, narrow laundry basket to fit in the closet (he already had two laundry bags). We found both at the Athens Target. We also got from home a lamp for the desk (there is only the overhead light) and an extension cord (for the clip on light). We found a small set of shelves at Sams that fits perfectly on the narrow ledge that joins the two desks for his printer, paper, etc. We also purchased our refrigerator there. Found the proper wattage/size microwave at Walmart. Another thing he is glad that he has is a Rubbermade gallon water dispenser with a nozzle that fits in the refrigerator (no room sinks in Creswell). The roommate provided the futon and rug. We were VERY glad that we brought our own cart on move-in day (and there were only 280 people moving in).
