I’ve got a question about move-in for continuing students – as I understand it, the first day students can move in is Aug. 30th (a Thursday) - and classes begin September 1. My question is what day & time the student has to arrive on campus in order to be able to get access to their room – except for red-eye flights, all the flights to NY from the west coast seem to arrive too late in the afternoon for my d. to get to campus during daytime, business hours – so I need to know if she arrives during the late evening or weekend whether she would be able to get to her room. (On top of all of this, we don’t know what her housing assignment is - she is waitlisted for housing – but we are guessing it will be Elliot).

Does anyone know how it works for the students to arrive & get their room keys?

I seem to remember that there are RA's and such are on duty to sign returning students in only until 5:00, though that might not be true. I suggest you give Barnard a call and ask them...maybe see if you can reach someone at housing? Have you checked the housing website??

We arrrived on the first day last year (also a Thursday) to begin moving our d in. There are people in the dorms actually physically signing students in and am not positive about the hours...9-5 rings a bell but I am pretty tired right now so my bells may be way off.....

I hope she gets her housing assignment soon!!!

Thanks -- there's no information on the website -- the earliest planes going out from the west coast arrive at around 4:45 pm at JFK, so obviously it isn't possible to get to campus by 5:00 pm. I will call housing tomorrow and try to figure it out.

Hopefully I got the 5:00 thing wrong....we just got in last night from going to S #2's wedding down in Naples, FL, so I was pretty tired when I wrote that...

OK, I talked to the housing people and they said that if she comes in after hours she will be able to get an emergency room key from the security people at the front desk, and then check in the next day to move in. So that's a relief. But we still won't know until August where she's living...... aargh.

Wow, Mardad, you get to do the whole first-year move-in thing all over again! As we say here in Georgia, "Bless your heart!!!" . TWO daughters at Barnard!!!

Calmom: Strange to say I PMed you without having seen this thread. Just felt to reach out. I thought housing was guaranteed. I didn't know they wait-listed. That sounds really difficult.

I am sure she WILL get housing....just she does not know where yet. Unfortunate, but a result of the housing "lottery". It's a confusing system (to me, any way), but aptly called a lottery as some "win" and some come out on the short end.

One of my d's roomies from her first year ended up in the same position as Calmom's d and got a single that she was okay with. My d was one of the fortunate ones and signed up with four good friends for a Plimpton suite her second year. This year, however, they just became "in demand" and many, like Calmom's d, were unable to get one. My d and her suitemates are staying put...they had a higher number in the "lottery", so that option was available to them.

Yeah, I knew system was a mess; I just didn't know that "wait-listed" was a possible outcome of lottery. D is already pondering her proxy for when she's abroad Spring semester.

BTW churchmusicmom, D is in Atlanta right now!

It's a "guaranteed" wait list so that means my d. will have a room, we just don't know where. My d. wants a single and we can't afford another year on the meal plan -- there were no more single rooms in dorms like Elliot when she came through, but she was one of the first on the waitlist so we'll see how it goes. It's frustrating, because she could get assigned to a double with a stranger without even the sort of matchmaking/roommate questionnaire that first years get -- but for us it would be even worse if they put her in a single in the quad, given the food plan issue. I simply can't see paying $4400 for food that she won't eat - and with Macintosh closed the food plan doesn't leave much in the way of alternatives. She's a light eater and will be used to cooking for herself after living in an apartment over the summer.

Cool, Mythmom! I hope she is enjoying our nice cool weather! I understand that it is actually cooler down here than up in NYC right now and that is just odd.

Hope she is enjoying Atlanta...is it her first time here?

Calmom: I know how you feel about the meal plan. I'm not thrilled to be paying for it again. Last year off the food plan cost was only $250.00 a month. We are biting the bullet, so to speak, because D is going to England 2nd semester.

I hope your housing issues get settled soon. Yeah, those MSM dorms sound cushy. This past year at 110 there was a hookah bar downstairs that closed and was dismantled. Th construction sent mice flocking to D's apartment. I think she's actually glad to be back on the Quad. I am hoping it frees her time for more extracurriculars. A theater prof. asked her to audition for a play she's doing.

churchmusicmom: It's her third time! She called today for cream cheese brownie recipe so it much be much cooler in Atlanta. It was 90here today; I am not baking!

She's going to see Harry Potter at midnight as is my son here. She's with her boyfriend so she hasn't really spent much time on the phone with me. Last two times she went she stayed with relatives; this is the first time she is with boyfriend and family.

My son's violin teacher, who is a Georgia native, just got back from coaching chamber music groups in Atlanta for two weeks. She said it was a relief to be able to say "ya'all" without New Yorkers making fun of her. Last year she took all her students, son included, to "violin boot camp" as she called it, in the mountains of Georgia. He loved the mountains so much he decided to go to Williams.
