Just wondering if AU provides carts or anything to help students move their belongs in to dorm rooms or is it all left to lifting and carrying? Any tips for move in day would be appreciated!

Don’t remember seeing any carts - but there were lots of fraternity men helping to carry everything in. And they move fast! It is a good idea to label boxes etc. with room number so the helpers can just grab stuff and move.

Yes, there are flatbed carts that you check out in the lobby of your dorm. Also lots of AU students who are there to hep students move in.

Housing and Dining Programs recruits a corps of students to help out with move-in, and each hall has a number of carts that can be checked out at the front desk of each building.

I remember the guy from housing saying at Eagle Summit that it is a good idea to bring your own cart, if you have one, because the ones they have go really fast. Very nice to know there are students around to help…great advice to mark boxes with room number.

Is there any advantage to waiting until Sunday to move in…I would think that the big rush would be on Saturday?

Which ever day you arrive I suggest you arrive early. We arrived when the halls opened and had no problems with parking, unloading, etc.

We had planned to arrive early as suggested, but certain floors are assigned to certain times. My D’s floor has 11 a.m. I’m guessing it will be hectic. We plan to bring our “patience” as suggested at orientation . And a hand cart if it fits in the van with the mountain of stuff.

At Eagle Summit, they were saying things get better after 3. We were planning to aim to arrive then. Bad idea? My daughter’s floor has the earliest move-in time but I’m not sure why we would have a sense of urgency to get there.

Also, we were warned that we could be sitting in the car waiting to get to the dorm for over an hour. Yoiks.

My son has the 11am time too. We were planning on getting there Saturday at around 10:30 (and hopefully be at the front of the building by 11:30-12). No matter what, we are expecting it to be crowded and hectic.

My D’s year did not have assigned times (2 years ago) but we arrived around 3pm and were at the front of the building in about 20 minutes. We (D, grandma and I) unloaded and set everything on the curb. I went to park the car in the Nebraska parking lot and by the time I got back, everything was in the room and grandma had even made the bed! It was almost painless.

Had to buy more hangers, a longer internet cable, food and sodas for the fridge, and an extra pillow the next day.

There are assigned times per floor this year, but Mr. Moody indicated that the longest waits were first thing in the morning and that, if you come after 3:00, you probably won’t have to wait or deal with crowds at all. Since we are local, I think we will likely come later in the day.

The other thing I remember that he said about move in day is that you can absolutely count on two things: 1) it will be the hottest day of the year in D.C. and 2) you will absolutely get into an argument at some point with your kid. Tension high, lots of complicated feelings, hot weather, waiting and crowds…the recipe for at least of few moments of stress.

His presentation at Eagle Summit was great! Loved hearing about the normal bumps in the road for making this transition. Can’t believe it is only a month away!

Kelly, considering that DC has already had seven 100+ degree days this summer (including today), I think we might be in luck this year and not have the hottest day of the year. Of course, last year there was an earthquake & a hurricane right around move-in day, so hopefully things will be less eventful this year. I agree that Mr. Moody’s presentation was quite interesting, and I also can’t believe that we will be there a month from today.

My favorite thing he said was when he was describing the tight security to get into the dorms, and he said, “Except on move-in day. Then we let in anyone who looks sweaty, or mad.”

Kelly, see you in the Nebraska parking lot around 3:30!

I had forgotten that line about looking sweaty or mad! He was great!

And yes, I can’t imagine how it can be any hotter on August 18-19 than it has been already! We grew up in Texas and generally make fun of people who think it is hot here in VA/ DC, but this year has made me a believer! Several days, it has been way hotter here than it is at my mom’s in Texas. Hopefully, we have already paid our dues this year and we will welcome all our new AU friends with one of those lovely 75 degree summer days!

See you there!! And prayers for no hurricanes or earthquakes!

Guess I don’t listen to directions. We got there before dorms open so my D could grab the best bed, dresser, etc! She was in a triple. We parked right in front and got right in.

I beg you, please never say that out loud again!

Good point, Sikorsky! :-)

Fingers crossed and say a prayer, but the weather is looking pretty nice for Saturday’s move-in! Definitely cooler, with a slight chance of rain.

Hoping for a cool clear day. The cooler temps look likely. Good luck to all!

Looking good for Saturday! Wishing everyone a successful move in and year ahead!
