lol I like the “not w/o precedent” quote
Fendrock…

yes, sounds like someone in the office has a dry sense of humor…

What happens if you can’t move down until August 16th?

Re arriving on the 16th – seems like it would be a HUGE advantage to arrive the next day, once the madness had passed.

that is true, bates, bates west, and probably the roost wont let you move in early because they have camps going right until the last few days and have to clean the buildings. That is at least what i was told when i was denied moving in early to bates

its not a major disadvantage to move in on the regular day,its just more crowded…but its fun! the students are all so excited
there may be a disadvantage for an entering freshman to wait until the next day AFTER the first move in date(not after the early move in date)…theres an event called first night Carolina for the freshmen…I’m not sure if its that first night but it involves a trip to the stadium, fireworks, marching bands, music and food…S remembers it being lots of fun and very spirited…if its that very first night you might not want your freshman to miss it.

Thank you for that information - which I may have read in an earlier thread. My son is a counselor and required to attend the final night - Friday the 14th. We could drive him down on Saturday and he could make the Saturday night excitement - how late does the move-in part of the day go anyway - maybe we can do it all - we’re only driving from Maryland…

I believe move in goes until 5 or 6 p.m.

I concur with Cathymee, First Night is special and if at all possible I would make the effort to have your son down there in time to participate. As a fellow Maryland USC parent, I would suggest getting a very early start on that Saturday to avoid serious traffic delays.

Dorm notification
Someone asked about dorm notification in an earlier post. You will be able to go onto VIP and view your fall housing assignment --I think it’s 7/15 or sometime around then when it comes up. (Not sure about that date. Housing office could verify.) VIP will show your dorm, and list your roommate(s) with their contact information. Also, there are links to click about the room info: it gives dorm name and your room number. For some dorms, it lists things about the room configuration, such as 2BR/2BA no kitchen, etc.

collegemomkate

perhaps you could make it down in time for the evening festivities and not move his stuff into the room until the next day?He could pick up his key, meet the roommate, etc
S was able to be in contact with his RAa before he moved in…through Facebook…maybe your S will be able to connect also and meet up with the floormates before they leave for the evenings fun…

We were given permission to move in the day prior in July - you will know around the same time the fees come out. The RM’s are moving in Aug 3, and then have a week of training - regular move in is August 15, 2009… so, if you are out of state, you can usually get permission to move in on Friday. Just call Housing after you get your assignment and pay your fees.

Also LOFTS at Bates - if you rent- they are due back during exams… who made up that silly rule??? Not good business! We mailed everything to a hotel and stayed there the night before so we didn’t have to haul everything.

I checked recently and early move in will not be permitted for the Honors dorm (no surprise there, I’m sure they will want every available minute to finish up…)

Bed Height?

I seem to recall when we took a campus tour that our guide said that if you don’t wish to loft you could raise the bed to the “Highest” setting and there is plenty of room for underbed storage. Can the beds be adjusted? How high can they be raised? I would liketo buy some under bed storage containers if practical. Anyone have experiecnce with this?

My son has been in both Capstone, Columbia, South Quad, and West Quad, all of which have the beds that can be raised. You want to double-check about your student’s particular dorm, because I’m not sure all dorms have those semi-loft beds. If I can, I’ll get him to measure the height and I’ll post it. The highest setting is much higher than say, those bed raisers that you buy at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It was tall enough for him to put a 2-shelf bookcase under the bed, and he has also stored a pretty deep rolling plastic bin that held all his linens, towels, etc. It gave him plenty of storage, and we preferred it over the loft. If you use a loft, then the space under the bed is usually “lost” as storage, since most students put a couch/futon there.
There are several height settings on the bed. Be SURE and take a hammer with you! We could not get the boards out of the slots with our hands, but a tap of the hammer worked perfectly. You do not need any other tools.

Thanks. My D is much more interested in clothes and shoe storage than in lofting for a futon!!

She will be able to store quite a bit under the raised bed, then! My husband thinks it was around 24 - 30 inches cleared height space under the bed. I will see if my son can measure the height of his bed so you can get a better idea.

Proudpop:
I just got back from USC, and measured my son’s bed height in the top, semi-loft position. From the floor to the bottom of the bed frame, it is just over 33.5 inches. Once you clear the bed frame, under the bed is 3 feet from the floor to the bottom of the mattress.
My son actually had the dresser completely under his bed, along with a bookshelf and some rolling bins.
When the bed is in this high position, you can actually push the desk under the bed, and my son said that some people put the desk perpendicular to the bed, and push the desk halfway under the bed (the side with the 3 drawers). This makes an L shape, with enough desk surface area out to work on, or put a laptop on.
Hope this helps!

That is a lot of room! Something to discuss with my daughter. She will be living in new Honors dorm. I assume they will have similar furniture.

Thanks for investigating. I really appreciate it.

Just heard from Housing…no early move in at Bates House. They are doing some renovating and will need every last minute until move in day…

Does anyone know if Bates House has the semi-loft beds? Any advice from any past Bates House students on how to best arrange the room to maximize space and make it the best space possible. Thanks!
