Move-In Maker

Besides being able to move-in early, what other benefits are there to being a move in maker? Are there any negatives?

Should I do it as an incoming freshman?

Any input is appreciated.

Biggest benefit is to move in early. It is a good way to make friends with other move-in makers. There is a volunteer commitment but not too bad. I think they give you extra meals for the time you are there.

If you want to move-in early then I would do it.

You can also just pay to move in early, if that’s all you’re after… I always did.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a MIM question. I applied to be a Move In Maker a couple weeks ago and I got an email today thanking me for volunteering and telling me move-in dates and that I’d get more information later in the summer. Is that confirmation that I’m going to be a move-in maker? It didn’t actually say anywhere in the email “Yes, you can be a Move-In Maker for your particular hall” or anything explicitly saying yes like that. So is that their confirmation email or is it just a general email to everyone who applied telling them the dates and later in the summer they’ll tell us yes or no, or what?

I definitely recommend it if it’s your first year at Michigan. Not only do you meet people and get to move in in a relaxed environment you have time to get your books, arrange your room , and get accoustumed to college life without the craziness of welcome week.

You learn a lot about college life and the atmosphere before the majority of the freshman show up which is a huge advantage for knowing where to go for welcome week. It was a great experience plus you get like 10 days in ann arbor without classes.

@Iloveumich I think you did get in, I remember being kinda confused about whether I had gotten in or not. Its not too selective, they like volunteers.

iloveumich, the communication they give back at first is not too good but I think that’s their way of saying you got in. There’s not much they can do at this point because the dorm assignments haven’t been made but I recall they were still asking for volunteers in August.

Does being there a week early affect your friendships with people who move in during the regular times? I feel like the adjusting period is where most people make friends…

Not really, you make even more friends when everyone else shows u, all the move in makers were excited to meet their new hall mates.

Do they plan activities for you during the week leading up to move in days? Or are you left to freely roam yourself?

How would we put down our “Fall 2012 Housing Assignment” under the move-in maker application if we don’t know our housing yet…?

There is a meeting and I think there may be a pizza party but other than scheduling the shifts it is mostly unstructured. It could also vary from dorm to dorm.
