Move-in makers

who's doing it?

Move-In Makers | University Housing

has anybody heard back yet? I applied a long time ago but have yet to even receive a confirmation.

i applied a while ago too, i just emailed them today and they emailed me back saying that my building coordinator would contact me in early June and that i am one, so you should email them to find out.

What exactly does being a move-in maker entail? I know you move in early and help people unload, find their rooms, etc., but is it fun? Do you meet a lot of people?

I’ll be in Ann Arbor for most of the summer so I figured I might as well move in early, but I don’t wanna apply if being a MIM isn’t fun/worth it. I’m also a girl, and I have zero upper body strength - will I be required to do a lot of heavy lifting?

Anybody here done MIM/have any feedback on it? I don’t wanna apply until I’m sure it’s worth it!

Move-in makers help people move in, give directions, help unload, move stuff to their room, etc. I did it freshman year, and it was a good way to meet people. I know people who are still friends after meeting during move-in makers. You can opt not to help out with heavy lifting - you can help direct cars to parking lots, push the carts around, etc. When we weren’t working, we’d usually chill and play card games or something. I’d recommend it for sure!

I did it last year.

Pluses:

-You get to move in 4-5 days earlier, and thus get to explore campus/acclimatize.

-You have a good chance at making friends with your fellow move in makers. A few of them are some of my closest friends at Michigan.

-It’s service work, so you can put it on a resume.

Minuses:

-It actually hurts your socialization with your hall. You are moving other people in during the time when everyone else is mingling and getting to know one another. Even after just the first few days, people are a lot less open when forming friendships later on. Not that it is impossible by any means, but it becomes harder.

-It’s kind of annoying to be working when the vast majority of the dorm is celebrating their new found freedom of being at college.

-Not much is going on before school starts, so there isn’t much to do before the rest of the students show up.

The work isn’t hard, but it is time consuming. Moving is actually not that much easier than during regular move in day, because the move in makers help the regular folks move in, whereas move in makers do it all by themselves.

It says you have to work 4 shifts during move in week. How long are the shifts?

Each Shift lasts between 3 and 4 hours. 8AM-Noon, Noon-3PM, 3PM-6PM.

andre10 - quick question: aren’t move-ins only going to be from 8/26-9/2? And Welcome Week/when the majority of people are going to be moving in around 9/1 or 9/2, so wouldn’t you not really miss out on socializing with other people? Just trying to figure out if I should do it or not, thanks!
