Move-in

I recently got an advice packet from an ND sendoff that stated: "information yo will receive from First Year Studies will indicate that you can check into the dorm Friday after 9 AM. Some groups will be moving in earlier. HOWEVER, you can stop by the dorm on Thursday to "check out the room" and introduce yourself to the rector and/or RAs. More often than not they'll offer to help you move right in."

How realistic is this. I got the card from ND that needs to be on your car dashboard. Are they really strict about the times and such (it said that 2nd, 4th and basement rooms move in at 10:30 instead of 9 - do they really check?)

They have indeed cracked down on how move-in is handled compared to 3 yrs ago when we moved our freshman into the dorm. There will be plenty of security/staff outside of the dorms to control the flow of traffic/cars that are trying to unload for move-in. I suspect you could park at one of the remote lots and walk over to your dorm early to check out your room and meet the Rector/RA. As far as the 10:30 move-in time instead of 9 AM–this is new this year, again trying to control the influx of traffic and nowhere for anyone to park by the dorms. My guess is that perhaps they will ask for your room # and if it does not match up with the time, they will quite possibly deny you access. Before they instituted this move-in precedure, it was a nightmare with parking, not to mention the landscape being torn up, esp if there was rain!

hawkswim, you mentioned you’ll be in Alumni. I’ll tell you as staff there that you can feel free to stop by on Thursday if you wish, and to not worry about parking, as Alumni Hall has complete and unadulterated dominion over the entirety of Main Circle for the duration of move in. This should deal with the issue about basement, 2nd and 4th floors as well - we don’t have a basement or a fourth floor. On Thursday, tell the ushers you’re just stopping by to look around, that you cleared it with the Hall Staff (which you have), and unless they say it’s ok, you won’t be moving in. I know personally I came and stopped by Thursday night, but just made it a point to get in early Friday morning for move in. Technically, internationals are moving in Thursday, as they have special orientation commitments on Friday when everyone else is moving in, so there will be people in the dorm.

As for everyone else reading this post, obviously it’s a bit different, but I would say you’d probably be alright to stop by and visit on Thursday, even if you don’t actually move anything in. Friday and Saturday are really the days that have the commotion and chaos they’re attempting to stifle a bit.

ok…thanks. it doesn’t matter all that much, but I was just curious. I would assume it helps that my roommate will be getting either early (for Band Camp) as well.
