I'm auditioning for Viterbo University's BFA Acting this Saturday, and I was just informed that there is a movement session which I was not aware of originally! But, it's not dance, it's similar to movement class at theatre camp where you play games and move as different characters and improv.
I have no idea what to wear for it. They say comfy clothes. I was thinking leggings and a t-shirt and jazz shoes? Or are leggings considered inappropriate and I should wear loose sweatpants instead?
Help! :S
(I know it's not a big deal, but I wasn't aware of this session, and it's in 4 days!!)

My D has taken a lot of acting movement classes and generally the attire is black. Black tank top or Tshirt and yoga pants or sweatpants for guys. They often go barefoot but jazz shoes are fine too. My D says if the class is technique based it may be better if the clothes are snug fitting and not baggy, so they can clearly see your form. Good luck!

When I first read the heading I thought it was in comparison to gay actors… :)

Bisouu. Lol! I guess I am too used to saying “No, she wants to go to school for straight acting, not musical theatre…” The other way to read it never occurred to me, although it is a bit misleading!

Good luck Nomester!!!

bisouu, that’s hilarious! Like dramamom, I didn’t read it any other way either! LOL

Me too, bisouu.

@bisouu, OMG! I didn’t think of it like that, but now I see how misleading this title could be. Lol! I guess I, like dramamom’s daughter, refer to myself as a “straight actor” since I’m not auditioning for musical theatre!
Thanks everyone for the tips and the good luck! (And the laugh.)

My S has his first audition this weekend for a B.A., the website says “All applicants should wear clothes that are comfortable to move in.” His audition attire is black dockers, button down shirt and dress shoes, hoping this is ok…Thoughts?

S field - yes that sounds appropriate. The OP on this post was asking about an audition that includes a movement class. So most of the students at that audition will likely change into different clothes for the movement class. But without such a class most students do wear nice looking clothes for their auditions. There are a couple of threads around on what to wear if you search this forum.
The school is saying make sure your clothing does not inhibit your movement while you audition. Sometimes schools will have a brief warm up period too, stretches, etc, and they want the students to be comfortable doing that. It is for this reason that my D refuses to wear a dress to auditions! Even with dance shorts under she doesn’t like doing warm ups in a dress. Good luck!

dramamom0804-thank you for the information. The schedule does say there will be a group warm up then a collaborative devising workshop before the groups break down into the MT and Theatre track auditions…can’t believe it’s here! :)

Collaborative devising workshop? That’s a new one. Lol.
Break a leg!

SField, he’ll probably wear a t-shirt under his button-down, right? My son did that and usually took off the dress shirt for any warm-ups or group activities. If your son’s dress shoes are stiff or have slippery soles, he may want to re-think that.

Times3-good idea about the t-shirt, he will be wearing one. Thank you!

:)

Sounds great Sfield, and nomester, I think leggings are just fine, as are yoga pants. I wouldn’t go with sweatpants as they do want to see your form Break a leg to all!!!

Sorry to bump this thread up again but what shoes would be appropriate to wear for a movement portion of the audition? Would boots or flats be okay? I don’t own any jazz shoes or anything like that.

I would say flats or barefoot. Very often you don’t wear shoes from what I understand.

Agree with actingmom18. Plenty will be barefoot and fortunately your feet are easy to pack. Not the thing to sweat.

Lol halfokum!
My D always goes barefoot too.

If their are any kind of shoes specified in the school’s instructions–if it specifically SAYS “jazz shoes” for example–then you need to go out and buy jazz shoes.

If it just says there is a “movement” portion of the audition, and doesn’t say anything about clothes for this, or just says something like “appropriate for movement”, then I think, yes, flats or barefoot would be fine. I think I used to wear sneakers to improv class! Remember “movement” does not mean “dance”, if they meant “dance” they would have said “dance”.
