Guys its summer and movies are awesome. I've watched a lot of movies already but I've run out of good selections. So here's a thread for good movie recommendations! Woot.

If you happen to post one... be sure to include the genre and the "similar to..." so we know if it matches our taste. Also the rating and summary if you like.

A couple Movies I recommend: (I have more but I obviously haven't the time to list them all)

Leon - The Professional
rated R (blood and graphic scenes, but nothing like SAW). thriller movie, with some action scenes. It's an older film (1995) but that shouldn't stop you from loving it... an engaging tale about a hitman who's life takes a turn when he is forced to shelter a 12 year old girl. Its quite long (a little more than 2 hours). Can't think of a similar movie

Good will hunting
Rated R (Mostly F bombs): an engaging story about a mathematical genius who is an orphan. truly amazing story; deep themes... a great story.

Unthinkable
Rated R (blood and graphic violence). A thriller that actually has some philosophical components to it as well. Do the ends justify the means? After watching this movie, I answered this question differently. Great movie. Samual Jackson is a boss.

She's out of my league
A lot less crude vulgar/sex than american pie, and more romance. Still has the hilarious "loser meets hot chick" theme.

Inglourious Basterds
Genre: Not Sure
Rated R for Awesome
Head skinning, shooting, general awesomeness (not that bloodshed is awesome).

Step Brothers
Genre: Comedy
Two immature guys and a haughty brother. Plus a drum set.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
Genre: Comedy
Burgers and Neil Patrick Harris. Need I say more?

Finding Forrester
Edward Scissorhands
Avatar
TS3

Life as a House
Genre: Drama
People call it an American Beauty rip-off, but it isn’t.

Antwone Fisher
Genre: Drama
It’s a Denzel Washington movie. Nuff said.

^ I was expecting Forrest Gump out of you.

Forrest Gump
Genre: Kinda depressing
Best movie EVER.

You’ve never seen Forrest Gump?!

^A lump of gum dancing in a forest.

Oh yeah! Forest Gump is a classic that I totally forgot to watch. Also godfather… but movies from before 1990 are kind of… old.

no, well ive heard of it. but no.

It’s supposed to be a heart wrenching movie. Then again, so is Cinderella.

^^ It’s the journey of a man from Alabama with a 75 IQ, and his trips throughout important historical events, including meeting Elvis, JFK, mooning LBJ, and snitchin on Nixon.

^About a not very smart kid who can run really fast. That’s all I know… (Saw the beginning a couple times). I would think that its a really engaging story

I second Inglourious Basterds. It’s some of the best two hours of senseless violence and glorified brutality you’ll ever see in a WWII film. Plus the fact that the majority of the film isn’t even in English but it keeps you well-absorbed…

YOUR MOM is kind of old.
O.o That actually makes sense.

Chinatown (1974) is awesome. And if you thought Forrest Gump was depressing, wait until you see this.

The Elephant Man owns on the title of depressing movies.

Comedy:
Napoleon Dynamite - Because it’s more awkward than I am
The Hangover - Because it’s quotable and because it’s quotable

Animation (+ not necessarily just for children):
Fantastic Mr. Fox - Because it’s stop motion, funny, and based on a Roald Dahl book
anything with Wallace and Gromit - Claymation, also a comedy

Drama:
Gattaca - Slightly dystopian? Not sure how to explain it
Forrest Gump, as has been said
I want to say Fight Club but I’ve only read the book

(I do not recommend Avatar, because story is passed over in favor of graphics)

A.I.
O Brother Where Art Thou
Volunteers

In no particular order.

In the Mood for Love/Fa yeung nin wa
A (very) subdued love story set in 60s China. Beautifully and quietly acted. The final scene will undoubtedly stay with you. Very highly acclaimed. Beautiful score. Among Wong Kaw Wai’s best. Almost too perfect to explain. Art house international.

Nobody Knows/Dare mo shiranai
A mother leaves her children alone for increasingly long periods of time. Yuya Yagira’s portrayal of Akira is stunning, especially considering his being only 12, and received notice at Cannes. The other main actors are even younger and still great, especially Ayu Kitaura. A quiet and thoroughly depressing film. Art house international.

Paris, I love you/Paris, je t’aime
A collection of shorts, about Paris, of slightly varying, but overall, high quality. Inspired similar movies about cities the world over, including New York, but none achieved what the original did.

Suddenly, Last Summer
Classic film with Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. Incredibly controversial in its time and still shocking. A Hitchcock-like thriller, though director Mankiewicz hardly lacks his own acclaim.

Ponette
Similar to Nobody Knows in that it features young actors and alienation. Here, there’s a 4 year old Victoire Thivisol who portrays her character amazingly. Thivisol hasn’t done much outside of this, but was also lovely in *Chocolat/i, years later. Art house international.

Les Trois Coleurs: Bleu
Part of one of the most highly acclaimed trilogies of all time, Bleu leaves its mark. Juliette Binoche, as usual, is pitch perfect. I would recommend the whole series, but I’ve unfortunately only seen this one so far. Art house international.

Before Sunset
A near-perfect sequel of the critic’s carling *Before Sunrise/i, Before Sunset returns to the characters ten years later. A subdued love story, a talking film. The script won an Oscar. Art house.

El Crimen del Padre Amaro/The Crime of Father Amaro
Both Devastating and brilliantly acted, Crimen features a young Gael Garcia Bernal in a role reminiscent of The Scarlet Letter’s Reverend Dimmesdale. A love story. Not sure of the genre. Romance? Drama? Not Art house.

*La Science des R
