Movies and concerts on campus

Some of my best times in college were going to the concerts held on the "patio", the open area next to the pool at UMiami. I got to see some good acts, not big names, but up and coming bands, oldies but goodies. At the Rathskellar, there would be smaller bands, a guy with a guitar, less known acts.

On Friday night, there were free movies in one of the classroom buildings, some classics, some foreign films.

Are there any colleges out there that offer this kind of entertainment?

My son is in the Movies Critics Club at school. Every Friday, they screen a different movie in a larger classroom. Kids' choice. They bring in classics that they tape off Turner or American Movie Classic, they bring recent DVDs, or even just classics kids want to see over and over, like Star Wars or Monty Python. Because it's high school, if they do bring in an R movie, kids have to get a permission slip.

Anyway, because this is my son's favorite club, I think he'd really enjoy a campus that offers these kind of events, on campus, no need to get a ride or pay a taxi to go to town to do this. Just walk back to your dorm afterwards and crash, not a major effort to go to.

As for music acts, a group performing at the campus rec center or athletic facility, where you don't have to pay a cover to get in, buy food, liquor, worry about getting a ride and having a designated driver.

Any schools out there that offer this, particularly ones with engineering majors?

See, not all engineering majors are nerds. Some do have diverse interests.

Besides, probably a good place to meet those girls that are so lacking in engineering, as many of you comment here.

Missouri has free documentary and Indy films every Wednesday (not specifically that…but that’s what the Wednesday ones tend to be). Then on Friday’s, for $1 ,they have newer movies, that are in the stage between theaters and DVD. Some of the religious organizations do some film screenings, there are two film festivals (one for documentary, the other just student films), and then there is a film club. Never checked out some of the religious organization screenings or the film club. Then foreign language clubs do a few film screenings a year, and invite anyone. Foreign movies with subtitles at those.

I liked the Wednesday movies, although I had to stop going to that because I have to work Wednesday nights. An example of some of the stuff I saw there is Body of War ( [YouTube - BODY OF WAR Trailer [NEW]](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HZuQkITY64) ), The King of Kong ( [YouTube - The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMJZ-_bJKdI) ), and American Teen ( [YouTube - American Teen Trailer](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0E0E55ts-A) ).

Then there is the Ragtag Cinema ( [Ragtag Cinema](http://ragtagfilm.com/) ) which shows a lot of Indie films, and stuff that doesn’t quite make it to the major theaters. They do cult movie nights like every week that are free. Fanboy ( [YouTube - Fanboys - Official Trailer [HD]](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUjrG8gTmM0) ) is an example of what I saw there.

Plenty of good stuff for the film fan here.

Every few weeks, SSU has “Scene It Big Movie Nights”. They show movies that have left theatres but are not on video/DVD yet. They’ve shown Twilight, Dark Knight, Pineapple Express, etc.

We also have a lot of really cool speakers…Guy Fieri from Food Network was there recently, and Dane Cook came a few years ago.

Which Missouri college is this with the films? That sounds great.

Any more out there?

i’m sure all big college town schools have them, and then most smaller schools probably have free concerts and stuff organized by student organizations.

i think the only schools where this isn’t available to any extent are the small ones

My school, UC San Diego, regularly shows movies that just left theaters for $3 (but it’s pretty easy to sneak in, not that I would). We hold small free concerts with independent bands every once in a while and two big concerts (also free), Fallfest and Sun God, every year. This year at Fallfest we booked Lupe Fiasco, and for Sun God we had Augustana, Sara Bareilles, Iron and Wine, Motion City Soundtrack, and N.E.R.D. John Legend, Robin Williams, and The Smashing Pumpkins performed this year, too, but those weren’t free.

^^^^
My school definitely has them. Thursday through Sunday nights every week, MSU shows 4 feature films (most have not yet been released on DVD but have been run in theaters a few months prior) in one of the large lecture halls on campus for no charge to students. They also show some indie films once in a while for $2-3 a viewing. There are some film clubs and lots of organizations have feature film nights (ie showing documentaries related to their aim/purpose). We have rent-a-movie places in a few campus dorms as well, where we can rent from a pretty good selection of movies for free (2 nights per rental).

As for music acts/concerts, most we have to pay for (actss that came up to MSU included Lupe Fiasco/Asher Roth, Death Cab for Cutie, and Motion City Soundtrack). But we do get 2 free concerts a year with relatively big-names as well, 1 starting off the fall and another for “Sparty’s spring party” (barring cancellations due to inclement weather). There is battle of the bands as well, and very occasionally a student band will play for free on campus. And I think once a week at noon in the student union, there would be some sort of music act as well. So actually we have quite a few opportunities for movies/concerts.

To answer the other part of your question, the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering is pretty good.

I would guess this is probably pretty common for most colleges.

At Case Western, the Film Society shows movies every Friday & Saturday night, two or three showings a night. Bands play at the Spot every Wednesday, and we have big name bands (i.e. Jack’s Mannequin, Girltalk) that will play a concert a couple times a year. Those are usually $5 with your Case ID. Plus there are concerts and performances by Case ensembles all the time (chorus, dance, theatre, etc.)

University of Maryland has our student run Hoff Theather that plays free movies every week, $5 second run movies every day, and the occasional free sneak preview.

In terms of concerts, Student Entertainment Events (a group on campus) is a part of the Student Govt Assoc that bring big name acts to campus. We’ve had Ben Folds, Dashboard Confessional, Third Eye Blind, Ludacris, Wyclef, and a bunch of comedians and other musicians come to campus in the last few years.

SUNY Buffalo has a second run movie theatre in its Student Union that is free to all undergraduates. It usually shows 2 different movies per week during regular semesters.

There is also a concert featuring national recording artists once per semester on campus which, again, is free to all undergraduates. These concerts usually alternate between the rock and hip-hop genres yearly.

Movies are nice for entertainment !
