moving from the Pacific Northwest to the metropolitan South. What do I wear? How should I dress for each season? Is there anything "in" in particular? Are there some trends I should know about or avoid?

You should avoid the look crappy trend, it’s pretty popular… <_< where are you going exactly?

ATL, mayne

I can’t help you too, too much, since I live in a beach city further up north (although still in the South! Confusing, I know). Rainbows are the most popular thing here

Anyways, let me remind you: Atlanta is extreeeemely hot and humid! You’ll probably not need any heavy jackets. A hoodie or the like should suffice most days in the winter; rarely do we need heavy jackets here where I am and I’m a good 8 hours drive north from Atlanta. However, Atlanta is also very big and what is popular to wear will depend on which area of the city you are
Are you male or female? Either way, you can never go wrong with:

*jeans (not ripped unless you’re going for the trend…) or shorts (nice shorts! Booty shorts are popular with girls if they’re like, jeans or thicker fabrics and you have the legs for it. For a guy, you always have a bunch of good options for shorts o_o;)
*a nice shirt (cute blouse (not necessarily a button-down) if girl, band tee or the like if you’re a dude? Nothing oversized)
*clean sneakers if you’re a guy or cute flats if you’re a girl, and I think rainbows would still be popular
*maybe a hoodie if it’s windy or unusually cold?

However, this is if you’re not living in a more affluent area of Atlanta, in which case J.Crew never fails.

Female! I’m going to Emory and I need to get a feel for the style there. I come from the land of flannel, goretex, REI, fleece, and teevas (I like the music here in Seattle but tbh I am NOT a fan of our clothing style) and I predict that I’ll have to get used to major clothing shock.

wait, so would a hoodie be enough if it’s windy or rainy? What about a cotton blazer? Or a cardigan? Do people wear cardigans? Ummm and are Northfaces popular?

Also: I have a long black coat like Sandra’s
http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/4/5/4/d/Sandra_Bullock_is_1c07.jpg
…Do I need to bring it?

Also, boots. Do people wear them with dresses and things? Not like uggs, but leather/suede knee-high boots. And do people wear scarves? Colorful/light like a keffiyeh or thick/chunky knit scarves?

Thanks for your help, you guys (or Y’ALL, I suppose
)

p.s. Tights, too. Do you wear them? I like to wear a high-waisted skirt, a cute top tucked in, tights, knee-high boots, a cardigan and a scarf when it’s wintry here. Think something like this but with taller boots:

Will I look out of place?

The South sucks. Don’t move there.

Please don’t wear tights/leggings ever.

Just a suggestion from a guy’s point of view. If you are dressing to impress us guys, just lose the tights/leggings. They are not hot at all, and I’m speaking for every guy when I say that.

People wear cardigans, Northfaces, scarves, and all those things you’ve mentioned… in the winter. It’s 81 degrees outside right now. It’s pretty much shorts from now until September/October.

@ SLight: amen

Leave your current wardrobe/clothes at home. When you start college in the late summer, it will be hot and humid. Shorts, flip flops, sandals, cute dresses, skirts, tank tops-you’ll be changing multiple times a day because you’ll want to shower every time you go back to your room. Wait to buy the bulk of new stuff when you see what you like of the the stuff you see other girls wearing around campus. Did I mention it will be unbearably hot and humid? You’ll get used to it. You can bring winter stuff when you fly back from Thanksgiving or Christmas break.

Why is it exactly that tights are not hot? Just curious, dog.

P.S. I don’t really care if you think the South sucks, Baltimoron. I’m going to college there so just get over it.

I’m moving from the Northeast to the Midwest in a month or so. Thank goodness I’ll be coming back for college.

Yeah, I don’t appreciate the Midwest bashing…

^^^^That’s sort of ridiculous, to me.
My father’s from Alabama, so I spend tons of time in the south. In the summer, I just wear shorts and a blouse. Skirt and a blouse. Summer dress. Flippy floppies.
Most of my male cousins go with guy-shorts (never wear jorts, never, ever, ever!) or pants and t-shirts. Sometimes polos. Oh, and they wear sneakers on their feet.
When I go there in the winter, I dress like I would here in the fall for the most part. So I guess guys might wear jeans/pants and long sleeved t-shirts? I don’t pay attn to what guys wear. It’s usually rather plain. There are some days where it’s actually cold and one needs a coat.
It is, however, pretty frigging cold in Alabama at 4 in the morning in November (Black Friday shopping, what can I say?) Be prepared.

My aunt lives in Atlanta, and I usually spend a few days with her while in the South. I would say it’s cooler there than in Alabama. So, don’t get all freaked out.

Ok, thanks! I’ll definitely get some flippy floppies
and some skirts and shorts and stuff. It all sounds pretty casual to me.

Oh, it sounds like you have a really, really cute sense of style Parliament
You’ll do fine, especially since REMEMBER that when you’re in college, people stop caring about clothes when classes get going and they’re all ■■■■ I HAVE A PAPER DUE AT 10 AND A MIDTERM TOMORROW and blah blah blah…but yes, just transfer your clothing cuteness to more summer-appropriate clothing and you’ll be fine
Most of the items you mentioned are mostly wintry items that will never be needed somewhere as warm as Atlanta.

You will, however, probably use your cardigans and blazers in the winter. Those would be perfect. And I would say the south is pretty casual, most warm days girls just throw on shorts, flip flops and a cute top :p

And tote bags! Don’t forget the totes. We see totes all the time here. Unless you hate them…which if you do, that’s fine :p

In Atlanta, at Emory, you could get away with wearing whatever you want for the most part. It all depends on the style you want. Personally, I think you couldn’t lose with polos, shorts, khakis, jeans, flats, flipflops, loafers. Tights, imo, are fine. Scarves and boots are fair game in fall/winter. Ralph Lauren and Vera Bradley are your friends. Overall I would say to wear what you like and consider comfortable in the environment.
On a side note, the south gets an undeserved bad rep. It has it’s up and downs, good people and not so good people, just like any other region. It’s all about where you go and with whom you associate.
P.S. The Coke museum and the aquarium, which are right next to each other in downtown ATL, are fantastic… definitely go visit them if you haven’t yet. =]

cringe I could never live in the south, I absolutely hate the heat. Heck, this 60-70 degree weather in New York right now is too hot for me. I should totally move to Alaska…

Anyway, (sorry for rambling), I would expect anything in a light breathable fabric would work. I hear some people are still doing those maxi dresses (?)
But you really can’t go wrong with your typical skirts or shorts, and shirts – all in lighter cool colors obviously.

Good luck.
