Moving after Graduation

Who has moved after your kid graduated?

I am eligible for retirement this summer; my daughter is presently a junior in high school. I will work till she finishes senior year.

We live in West Texas after taking a job here 20 years ago when I got out of college. I love my job but hate the desert. My hubby and I have been planning to move closer to home and will be moving to Michigan when my daughter graduates May 2023. We are hopefully going to buy a house sometime during her senior year and start moving pets, stuff and older sibling there over the winter (we need to get pets out of this house so we can change carpet, etc before selling this house)

My daughter is really looking forward to moving north and would prefer to go to college in Michigan, but she is planning to apply broadly. Her goal is COA $10K or less and graduating debt free.

My question is what would our residence be? are we from Texas? from Michigan? or from both? I know it may be school dependent, but just curious to others who may have done this the level of mess I am creating…lol Just to add to the fun we will also probably be a financial aid nightmare, because we will literally be cutting our income in 1/2

We moved right after graduation. The residency rules vary greatly state to state. We thought we were going to MD and we would have needed to be residents for 2 years before we would qualify for instate tuition. We unexpectedly ended up in IL where D didn’t even apply.

Be aware that financial aid is based on the previous tax year so your child’s first year tuition will be based on your full income if you aren’t retiring until after she graduates.

A $10K COA is going to be a challenge as most schools. R&B alone can run double that without accounting for tuition.

Thanks, yes, we are massively chasing merit. Have several colleges she should get tuition covered with this year’s merit, but they seem to get frequently get tighter, so hopefully we 'll have a more comfortable idea, when next year’s scholarships come out this summer

If she graduates high school in Texas after living in Texas for 3 years and lives in Texas 1 year before the census date for residency checks, she will be a Texas resident for Texas public universities: Texas Residency | Undergraduate Admissions | The University of Texas at Austin

Acquisition of Michigan residency is described at Residency | Office of the Registrar
