Moving for in-state tuition?

I completely agree. This kid is has not yet applied to college and I hope that the parent doesn’t try to drag the kid through some illegal plan. I know that the kid feels awkward about it and doesn’t want to participate.

Sorry to take this thread on a personal tangent!

Definitely advise this person to step back from what they wish and look at reality. In general a student is a dependent and unless the extended family member is a legal guardian, the student is a resident of his parent’s state. A person can only be a resident of one state. There may be some unique circumstances for some people, but for nearly everyone a student is a resident of the state in which they resided when they attended/graduated HS.

I think when the family moves for work, not school, some states will allow a transition in residency for tuition purposes, but even that is probably not all states.

This topic has been very helpful. I will definitely pass on the wisdom!
