I recently learned I have to switch high schools because of my dad’s new job. I just finished my freshman year at my old high school, and I am going to start my sophomore year at the new high school. Will moving negatively impact my college admissions? The curriculum at the new high school seems way more advanced and in-depth than my old school, so I am not sure if I can do well. How can I recover from this sudden change?
Moreover, any general advice for handling this would be greatly appreciated.
The only impact that switching high schools will make is that colleges will receive copies of different transcripts (if not transferred between the two high schools). It sure doesn’t matter.
Colleges couldn’t care less, just make sure to keep your grades up. If the classes at your new school are more challenging, then I’d recommend easing into the new curriculum with a couple of less difficult classes. This way, you can really focus on your few academically-oriented classes without being overwhelmed. Basically just take it slow initially, then ramp it up as you grow accustomed to the academic rigor.
It is a disruption but many people move high schools and do just fine. I would work closely with the guidance counselors/teachers at the new school to be sure you are placed in appropriate level classes (not too easy, not overwhelming you). There will be plenty of time to get involved in ECs at your new school.
