A few questions for those of you "in the know":

1) On move-in day, do we have to go in the main entrance gate or can we enter off University Parkway?

2) I haven't seen anything about putting money on my daughter's Deacon card for buying books, printing, unnecessary purchases at the gift store, etc. Have I missed something or do we do that when we arrive?

3) Is there anything we might not think of that we should bring - besides the allen wrench to raise the bed :) ?

4) Will the Marriott Courtyard on University be completely full of anxious freshmen and families - haha!!

I cannot believe this day is finally here! I am so excited for my baby but so sad to be entering empty nesthood!

2) You can put/add $$$ to Deacon Card online. Your D has to set you up as an authorized user, as I recall. (That was all 4 years ago, now – so sad …)

3) Rooms are small – you’re better off waiting on more stuff til you see what fits! Buy stuff when you get there – don’t forget about the sale of room stuff on the quad where various vendors set up. Reasonable prices and very convenient.

4) Yes. (That was our favorite place to stay, especially for Family Weekend since we could walk to the football stadium.)

Good luck with move-in. We actually missed the worst of it since D went early for SPARC. We came down with the rest of her stuff and for the parent part of Orientation, but she was already in her room.

Staying at Courtyard by Marriott on University also!!!

When I spoke with the UPS store on campus, they mentioned that we can enter any of the entrances to the school. I was told that they re-route some of the one ways so we can pull up in front of the dorms (son is in Collins). They did say that you could wait an hour to an hour and a half in you car in line. You will drop off in front of your dorm, then you drive your car to a designated parking area.

Hi - you can add money to the Deacon Card just the way you paid the bill. Log into Deac and go to pay account - and there will be an option to add money to the Deacon card.

Bring a tape measure - to determine the best size rug.

Ah-h-h – that’s what we missed since D went early! Unlike S’s school where we pulled up in front of the dorm, our car was immediately surrounded by fraternity & sorority members who emptied it in about 3 minutes, and everything was hustled up to S’s room on the 2nd floor. I never touched a thing.

When D and her freshman roommate unbunked their beds (Luter), there wasn’t enough floor space to even think about a rug.

just dropped daughter off today for precamp (one of the best things about pre-camp is getting to unload early), back on Thursday — saw the dedication of South Dorm today. Everything went smoothly and everyone was helpful. Hope you all have safe travels.

My daughter will be in Collins. With the beds bunked and the dressers against the wall (not in the closets) does anyone know what size rug would fit?? I was thinking 5x7. Also, we are getting to Winston the night before. When does the line to the dorm start getting long?? Thanks!!

bballmom, having just dropped my daughter’s stuff off in Collins, I would highly suggest that you wait to buy the rug until after they decide how the room will be laid out. My daughter and her roommate (and a lot of the girls on their hall) want to debunk their beds, this leaves you with the choice of lofting, putting the dressers in the closets, etc… There is an earlier thread that shows a perpendicular layout that may make sense. While tight, we were able to make the items fit better than I thought we would. Ultimately it will depend on whether they loft or not.

Don’t know about the line for Collins, but have heard that there is a long line when campus opens in Thursday morning.

Did freshman orientation last year and I can’t remember what time move in began (8am?) but we arrived about 25 minutes before the start time. We were able to pull right in front of Bostwick and waited about 5 minutes before groups of kids came and took all my son’s belongings out of our car and into his room. He had a front facing room and when I looked out at various points during the morning it was pure grid lock. Best advice, get there early to avoid the traffic!

DougBetsy- just moved D into Bostwick too- they will need a shoehorn to get anything else in that room, but they love it. Now home to my very empty nest…

S also moved in the other day to Bostwick. Rooms are small but he likes his roommate and seems excited about things. WF did an excellent job with orientation program.

Went grocery shopping for one for the first time in about 25 years- didn’t know what to buy. I keep seeing a picture in my mind of a ship being launched- the ropes that hold it back snapping away one by one until it is completely free and sails away…
