Moving-in Day

Is moving-in day August 26th? Is it possible to move in at a later date? (Freshmen dorms)

Of course you can move in later... correct me if I'm wrong though, but aren't you in Stern? Orientation is mandatory, and it's during general orientation week, so you won't be able to delay the move-in date that much...

Well I was thinking maybe the 27th, the traffic on Sundays seems to be much less severe. Also, I think orientation for us sternies is on July 9th and 10th if I'm not mistaken :) Haven't heard of a general orientation yet...

The July orientation is optional (I didn't go and I don't know of anyone who did). The mandatory orientation is during general orientation week, but Aug. 27th would probably work anyway. Move-in day is always AWFUL, so if you can avoid it, do so. Actual traffic (in terms of car traffic) doesn't change much - it's more like the lines for the elevators and stuff :( If you're going to be in the area earlier with your parents and such, it might be worth a try to drop by the dorm the day before move-in day - I did it and they let me move in early and it made things so much easier. However, don't plan on it, because I've also heard of people being turned away.

Thanks for the info youko, I might move in on the 27th, if allowed. I can't even begin to imagine how crowded it'll be on the actual move-in day--my sister's move-in day was pretty hectic and she attends a suburban school.

stern mandatory orientation = getting free food and making stupid songs = not really mandatory

Move in day was SO CRAZY last year for me. Absolutely insane. Imagine trying to get 690-ish kids into one building in one day with only three elevators? NYU does they best they can do with organizing it all, but I don't think there is anyway to get away from the fact that its just a hectic process in a hectic city. You can move in later if you want to. Maybe even moving in later on the first day (like late evening hours), when most freshman are already in their rooms. This way, you won't miss the first night, but you probably miss most of the craziness of earlier in the day.

Or move in REALLY early.....so you can take that bed by the window instead of getting stuck with the crappy bed. I don't know...whatever.

CAS requires one orientation session, but they say you can still go to the general one on the 27th and 28th of august if you can't make it in the summer.....

move in day is the 26th, and i would HIGHLY recommend moving in that day. that evening there is a mandatory floor meeting where you find out about the hall, policies, etc. as well as a chance to meet your fellow floormates.

look at it this way - what's one day of craziness in the long run?

WE moved my son in to Rubin on move-in day. He was on 11th floor and since the line for the elevator was forever- we walked up the stairs umpteen times with his stuff. It was quite a work-out but we were able to do it. You will need a few people to help because its VERY tiring. Many people were using the stairs but most didn't have the hike we had. I wouldn't want to do it again.

Actually, the floor meeting is not that mandatory - I've had a policy of skipping pretty much every floor meeting I can, and it's worked out well for me :D
