Moving in early

Scheduled move in time is 6 to 8 p.m. What happens if you show up earlier in the day, say at 1 p.m. Will they tell you to come back at 6? Like to get a headstart while there's still daylight in case of unforseen shopping needs. Also, what's involved in moving in? Do you have to sign papers, etc. Or do they just point you in the right direction, and off you go? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Nope they won't care - it would make our (ORL staff) lives easier if our residents moved in when they are assigned, but we know thats not going to happen with everyone - you won't be turned away.
When you move in, youre going to be asked to sign a move-in card and give your mothers maiden name (as a security word when you need to get a new room key or whatever).
After you have your key, you're on your own (kinda) to move in how you want. You can check out a cart to move all your stuff in, and there will be Welcome Week Assistants to help you out however they can.

uhh....my mother's maiden name is actually my official middle name, so other people are probably gonna know it (like when i fill out forms and stuff), so....is there any other password i could use?

Ummm... that's okay... isn't your mother's maiden name supposed to be your middle name in most cases? That's why you usually don't tell others your middle name at UCLA.

Oh I thought most ppl used their "second first name" as their official middle name, lol.

Alright so I'm wondering. Come move in day, what do you do with your stuff will you check in? In my case I'll be living in Hitch, and know that I unload (but don't park) in lot 11. So do I stick a parent with my stuff while I go and check in?

Yeah - leave someone with the car while you go check in at Hedrick front desk

wait so u unload in lot 11, hop on the car, drive to the dorm, hop off, go to front desk and check in, then drive back, then what??

you're not necessarily in lot 11. check your move in packet. it tells you your designated unloading area in the paragraph right under your roommate's name. mine's lot 7.

but i have no idea how this process works...so we goto lot XX, unload, and then what?

lol no, you park in lot 11, leave someone with the car while you walk to the front desk to check in and get one of the carts, then go back to the car, unload your stuff and bring it to your room.

is there any way to figure out which lot we're supposed to unload in if i lost the letter?

O_O.....lot 7 is ALLL the way down under the IM field and i'm ALLL the way up in Rieber Vista....

The parking lot will depend on where your dorm is. Lot 11 happens to be really close to Hitch (and I bet the Hedrick people head up there also) so I'm unloading there. After unloading is done, they ask that we move the car.

so parking and unloading is different??....umm im supposed to park in lot DD for De Neve...so where would i unload?...sorry i lost the letter like jbaskin

I recall it said somewhere in your move-in packet. Possibly even on the parking pass itself.

oh ok i found it thx!!! i was all confuzzled....I guess lot DD IS my unloading area haha......do we have free parking for the day though if we park in lot 7 with our permit?

okay i just went to housing.ucla.edu/movein

changed my day altogether. got my confirmation and parking permit, but on the bottom it says: "you may choose a new move-in time up to September 16th 5pm" which is obviously past.

i hope it doesn't mean anything. i was originally scheduled for early morning Friday, and i just switched it to Sunday afternoon.

where's lot SV, is that just the U-turn area by Sproul

oh they give u a cart.. thats the missing puzzle. so what if u want to drop things off and then come back later? can u just take the room key and go to ur room to drop a couple things off and then take up on the cart offer later?

I wouldn't worry about where to park very much (if at all) - you'll see once you get here, but there will be hundreds of people (welcome week assistants, CSOs, etc) telling you where to go and what to do lol.
So don't stress about it.
