Moving in... Ridiculous ?

So I'm just wondering as I pack... Does anyone know what check in and moving in is like on the first day ? Since apparently you only get one hour to move your stuff, is there unloading zones or Dollies they let you use?
I'm going to be living in San Jac, and although me and my roomate got the second floor, were so overwhelmed
. Could someone share how all this typically works ?

San Jac offers dollys but they go quickly - it’s advised to use your own from home. Ive only been here since the summer and check in was a breeze - not sure how its going to be like in the fall.

Theres two parking spaces on the side of Prather opposite to San Jac that say A PERMIT ONLY MON-FRI 7:45-5:45 — so if you’re moving in on the weekend, that’s ideal. If not, theres a space between San Jac and Roberts over on Speedway (near Cypress Bend Cafe) it should be okay if you leave your blinkers on.

But of course DO NOT park along the yellow line because I’ve seen people get tickets that way – only a few feet away from were they should have been.

Anyway, you’re lucky to get San Jac - but luckier that San Jac has elevators!!! It was a *****h to move in to Roberts where I am now. I mean boxes…up flights of stairs…just sucks.

Good luck!

You get one hour to check in, and even then you can show up outside of that hour. You get unlimited time to move in.

You only get a certain amount of time to park your vehicle next to the dorm though. They give you a special permit that lets you park right up near the dorm itself. The pedestrian/bicycle area between San Jac and Prather (on the west side of San Jac) is opened up to car traffic and people can also park there with those temporary Loading Zone (LZ) permits.

You can also just park in the parking garage for free all day, and walk all the way to the dorm with your stuff. The Brazos garage is pretty close to San Jac/Prather/Jester so it’s not that bad at all to park there. If you are moving into Jester you pretty much have to park there. San Jac and Prather people can park closer to San Jac and Prather.

And yes, UTPTS is always driving around giving tickets to people parking in the wrong area during this time.

The best way to do it, is show up about 40 minutes into your hour for check in. So if you can check in from 10 to 11, show up at 10:40. This way you are there after the big rush of people that feels like they need to get there at 10 on the dot, and you are there before the people who show up too early for the 11 to 12 check in. Then the line will be very short, and you can get your keys quickly. Once you get your keys you get a parking permit good for an hour (sometimes they give you longer, I got an hour and a half, the person writing the permit was just nice I guess) and you can go park your car near the dorms. Once you park it there, unload all your stuff and bring it to your room. In San Jac, I recommend using elevators only to go up if you have a big piece of furniture or something. Otherwise, take the stairs, and always take the stairs when going down, it’s just much much faster.

Once you get everything move in to your dorm, go ahead and move your car to the garage, you can park all day for free like I said earlier. The gates are up and you don’t pull tickets or have to pay. Then, go back to your dorm and unpack and arrange everything.

^great advice! Thank you!

Y2K, thanks! I will give your advice to my husband and son. I’m kind of relieved I’m staying home! It sounds crazy.

Oh dear. My parents are NOT going to be happy D: Are there any All UT Permit areas near any of the dorms? (do such areas even exist anywhere?)

Thank you so much Why Two Kay!!! I was feeling so out of the loop. I appreciate your detailed information for those of us new to this…

“Oh dear. My parents are NOT going to be happy D: Are there any All UT Permit areas near any of the dorms? (do such areas even exist anywhere?)”

This depends when you check in. The parking on San Jacinto street south of 21st street is “Any UT Permit” after 5pm on weekdays (until 4am) and all day on weekends. So if your check in is 10am on Friday, you are out of luck. If your check in is on the weekends, you are better off.

However, walking from those spots to your dorm is not exactly quick because there is a creek running between the dorm and the street. So, you are actually better off parking in the parking garage and unloading from there.

But you get an hour (or more) on the LZ permit they give you. What they do is write the time the permit expires on it. So, I checked in around 1:45 last year, and they just wrote 3:00 on it. So I had a little over an hour to use it (there is no ‘start’ time).

How long exactly is it going to take to unload your car of the large boxes and stuff? I wouldn’t expect more than an hour. If you are in San Jac or Prather (or anything that’s not Jester basically) you will park close to your dorm to unload. There aren’t that many stairs and the elevator rides won’t be long (in San Jac or Duren) because there are only like 5(?) floors. So you can make lots of quick trips.

If you are in Jester, you are going to have to park in the garage anyway to unload (there really isn’t any LZ parking near Jester). You can usually get on the first few floors in the garage, so unloading isn’t that bad. But when you are in the garage you get unlimited time to park there, so the long elevator rides up to the top floors of Jester (yes, they will take a while since only 3 or 4 people can fit into an elevator if they are also holding a box or suitcase) won’t matter as much, since you get unlimited time to park there.

how about early check in? the days before the 20th.

If you do park on San Jac St. south of 21st, you have to walk back to 21st street to get to San Jac dorm because of the creek there. If you’re parking there but are trying to get to Moore-Hill, Roberts, or Brackenridge, you’ll be walking up a hill from San Jac St. to get to those dorms. Keep that in mind when you’re moving all your stuff, you’ll already be getting a good workout going up and down stairs if you’re in BRP, or Moore-Hill ;)

Oh man this is going to fun… lol
Thanks everyone for the advice though. I hope it isn’t crazy crowded though, San Jacinto is a big dorm and Jester is huge too, so won’t everyone be trying to move in asap?! ahh.

I do have another question though… is there anyway i can check in early?
or do I have to check in between the hour that im assigned?
For example Why Two Kay you said to check in like forty minutes after my assigned time… so if mine is 4 -5 pm, i could only do it between or after, not before?

You are supposed to check in during the hour they assign. So, if your time is 4-5, then show up at some time between 4pm and 5pm. However, you could always change your time on the My Housing page. If all the times are already taken up (I haven’t looked in a while) then I believe you can still just kinda show up whenever. I have 10-11am this year, and I plan on arriving possibly after 11, just because the car ride could take more time than expected.

All you do it like hand them your ID, or something, I can’t remember exactly for sure, but I don’t really think the times are enforced. I mean, what happens if I showed up later anyway, of course they have to let me check in!

/I don’t know for sure though.

Is the parking for Duren on Whitis? And is the all-day free garage parking just for Brazos, or for all garages; and is it all three days? Thanks a mil.

Is there parking around Kinsolving? Are there elevators in Kinsolving?

@smartone92: I’m in kinsolving right now and yes there are elevators but parking im not sure about that. Theres really no big parking lot you can park nearby.

How was check-in btw?

My husband helped my son move into Jester West this afternoon. DH said he was surprised and impressed at how smoothly it went. He also liked the room layout. DS was happy that he liked the room BETTER than the renovated one he stayed in for orientation! The roommate hadn’t shown up yet, so DS was able to get things unpacked easily.

They also toured the Taos Co-op yesterday, and liked it. DS will stay there starting next summer or fall.

We can echo the comments from others that the process went smoothly. The check in at the baseball field lasted no longer than 10 minutes. There were even some volunteers at the dorm (San Jacinto in our case) offering to help carry items, etc. The only warning - pay attention to where you park! We made the mistake of parking in a space designated for University vehicles only for about 20 minutes and took home a $50 ticket.

You get your key at the baseball field right?
And is jester easy still givin out dollies?

Move in was so simple yesterday. Check in was quick and we were heading to Duren Hall in no time. For the record, her check-in time was from 8-9am and we got there at 9am. We could not find a LZ parking spot so we chose to just do the TSG parking garage. Parking was FREE for the entire day and the walk wasn’t bad at all. The whole family came so we had a total of six of us hauling stuff to the dorm. Rolling suitcases made the transport very easy.

We were very impressed with the entire process!
