Moving in

So I thought I’d start a new thread about moving into the dorms because the very scarce info I could find was from several years ago.

How does it work on move-in day? Especially for those of us who are coming from a long distance away, I’m having a hard time figuring out the logistics.

I already know about the option to order all the stuff from Bed, Bath & Beyond, but how do you actually get it to the school? I can see all of us trying to drag comforters, pillows, towels, trash cans and the like through the subways and walking the couple of blocks to school with all of it!!

I read that at NYU they provide shuttles to both BB&B and Target so people can haul their stuff that way. Does Pace have a similar service? Or what do people do?

Are there other discount type stores nearby for students to pick up basics like laundry soap, toothpaste and socks? I know the shopping options in NYC are too numerous to imagine, but I’m talking just the basics. I have this image that all that stuff will cost a fortune with no Wal-Mart nearby!

This is a great question. In our case, we already have purchased all her stuff; comforter, pillow, everything on the list.

When we went to the preview weekend last week they mentioned something about bins people loaded their things into. My issue is as to where we are supposed to park, since much of the area around the college is a “blue zone”, which means we can’t park anywhere, and even if we use the parking garage across the street, once they put the car away there is no coming and going, and there is just not enough on street parking around the college for every parent to park.

I am sure they have their ways though, lol…but I hope it wasn’t mandatory that we order from BBB or something like that. We also already purchased a mini fridge and microwave, though it says online they are to be rented. We didn’t see the point in renting something she was going to need all four years.

Tracy, there are also Duane Reade…a version of Walgreens, on almost every corner. There is one right by Pace, and there are other little stores all around where they can get toiletries, etc. The book store also has some things in a jam.

Does anyone know how soon the students are allowed to move in to the dorms?

According to their website it will depend on what residence and what floor they will be living in. Here’s a link:
[Welcome To Pace NYC Housing - Planning for Your Arrival | Housing and Residential Life | Pace University](http://www.pace.edu/housing/new-york-city-campus/virtual-welcome-packet-planning-your-arrivial#VWP05)

Tracy, thank you for the link and for adding my daughter to the “Final Decisions” list.

y’all are giving me agita! AND to make matter’s crazier, move-in for S#2 at Rider is same day. Gonna try to get one in a day early…I think…help.

OMG, are you KIDDING ME?? That’s NUTS! Well, maybe S#1 will have a different day. IT looks like the Maria’s Towers move-in times are spread over 2 different days, if he’s going to live there. And John Street is spread out over 3 days. Maybe you could call and request a day once the assignments are made. Or if his roommate gets in on the “right” day, he could come in a day later (I guess that could apply to either case).

For the time being, ignorance is bliss. Will get through crazy week of work first. It’s on my list for early May to start researching the logistics… Meanwhile, the boys are fighting over who gets mom and who gets dad to help them set up. Hahahah!

^^^Haha. That’s funny.

Moving in is actually a very smooth process. You will pull up to a loading/unloading area. Current Pace students will help you unload the car into giant bins. The new student will then go check in, if two parents are available - one parent will accompany the bin up to the students room, while the other parent goes and parks the car (best option is a parking garage). When the student is done checking in, they will head up to their room where the parents will be waiting with the students belongings.

And yes, shuttles are generally provided for big trips up to BB+B. However, most students already come with everything.

Regarding minifridges and microwaves. I HIGHLY recommend you return one if you already purchased it. Every dorm besides Maria’s Tower has a refrig, microwave, etc. Renting one for the year is much cheaper, and easier. They drop them off for the students, and haul away when done.

Thanks, NYC143! I’m still a little unclear about those of us (and there are MANY this year!) who are flying in from other states. We won’t necessarily have a car to unload! Everything we are bringing will be in suitcases that we will be schlepping through the subways! It should be very interesting. Good to know there are shuttles for trips to BB & B. We will definitely be doing the “buy here, pick up there” option. Someone on another site mentioned that B, B & B has something akin to a bridal registry for Universities where the school lists all of their suggested paraphernalia. That sounds like a brilliant idea. Haven’t checked it out yet, though.

@Lulusmom2, on Pace’s website it says that you are not allowed to bring your own microwave at all if you’re living in Maria’s Tower. If you want a microwave, the only option is to rent from them. You may bring your own fridge if you want, though.

Don’t worry - I’m very familiar with the move-in process for those coming from far away. Once upon a time, I was one of those students. I would recommend taking a cab down to campus, or renting a car for the day. Renting a car will allow you to be on your own schedule regarding the BB+B trips, or just allow you to go to a local mall or target. If you rent a car in New Jersey, and stay in NJ for the night, it will be significantly cheaper. Jersey City is very close, and the hotels are affordable.

The dorms will supply a list of items they recommend, but it truly isn’t much. Bedding (normal twin size), decor, towels, and shower caddy are the most important. A desk lamp isn’t necessary - most of them are the incorrect wattage anyways. Trashcans are provided. Here is a list that might help: http://www.pace.edu/emplibrary/FAQ%20-%20Items%20to%20Bring.pdf****

Is there going to be an issue if we DON’T return and come with the micro/fridge? Just seems silly to rent and pay for something we already have…an unneeded expense for us, since we have the items already.

@ Lulusmom2 - From the website you won’t be allowed to bring a standalone microwave if in Maria’s Tower. I think the issue is overloading the circuits. The microfridge combo unite have special plugs that utilize less power. We’ve encountered other universities with the same requirements for their dorm rooms. Here is a link that explains the microfridge power features: [Safe Plug® Power Management System | MicroFridge®](http://www.microfridge.com/features/safe_plug.html)

You beat me to it! I was going to say the same thing. It’s spelled out here:
[Welcome To Pace NYC Housing - Planning for Your Arrival | Housing and Residential Life | Pace University](http://www.pace.edu/housing/new-york-city-campus/virtual-welcome-packet-planning-your-arrivial)

If you scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page (to just above the chart that details the move-in times by building/floor) there is a link to Collegiate Storage and Rental and the following blurb:

Students wishing to rent a microwave/refrigerator combination for the academic year (Maria’s Tower residents only) can utilize this service to do so. We recommend discussing this with your roommate first, as only one unit is permitted per residence hall room. Students who do not rent from Cecil may bring a small refrigerator, but are not permitted to bring a microwave.
