Moving In

My friend is going to school across the country (Los Angeles to New York). HEr parents aren't going with her and she's worried about being able to handle moving in, buying stuff for her dorm, etc. Has anyone else had this experience?

She is worried about getting to the shops for purchase or loading it all into the dorm? People come from lots farther than across the USA and buy, load in and arrange themselves and their stuff. Don't stress.

she can order stuff online from bed bath and beyond, linens and things, etc, and have it be delivered to her school. my roommate was from seattle (school in CT), and she sent the rest of her stuff by UPS to the college. Also, at the end of the year, your friend can rent storage space for stuff she doesnt need over the summer (very cheap if she splits the storage with someone else)

I'll be flying with my D from LA to Mass. in the fall, and I can appreciate your friend's anxiety. A lot of it stems from the unknown, so she can lessen the stress by getting some information now.

Suggest that she immediately align herself with the guides (other returning students) already there on campus, and try to connect with someone close to her room - if not her own roommate(s) to maybe hitch a ride with to the local Taget/WalMart whatever. Some schools will even have special shuttles available to go to the local shopping places. Maybe she could call now and check in with the admins to see if they have any program like that.

Also have her check online for the local (to her school) shopping/banking/public transportation.

It's all pretty overwhelming. Give her a big hug and offer to do some of the checking with her.

there was a girl across the hall from me who was from florida. I remember her family talking about this thing at bed bath and beyond where you go to a local store, pick out all the stuff you want, pay for it, but instead of taking it from the store, they call up a store near your school, and they put all the same stuff aside, and then you pick it up from that store.

Thats what I did, the bed bath and beyond thing. I am from New Jersey going to school in Louisiana. You go to the local store and specify that you need to do this for school. They give you a scanner thing and you scan everything you want or need. Then the list is arranged at the bbb closest to your school and you just go and pick it up. It can also be delivered to the dorm I believe.

hahhaa. what bout this. a kiddo flying from Hong Kong(asia) to Michigan by himself : O. maybe i should start getting worried. hahahaha.

I am coming from Austria...2 overpacked suitecases...and we'll see about the rest:-)

My mother is coming from Germany with me to help me move in. And I'm still nervous about it. I can't even imagine going alone.

Oh, take it easy. I am going from Lithuania to PA this fall all by myself and I am not worried at all! Just pack your stuff so that you can carry it, spend a few weeks in your local gym to build up the muscules you'll really need carrying your backpack and suitcasees, and that's it!

The only really annoying thing is actually moving in. i.e. getting your stuff from the airport to the college to the dorm...especially if your dorm is 4 stories without an elevator or something. But getting what you need after that is usually not a problem. If you live in a big city, you can usually buy anything you need in town, if not get it online. Between move-in and the start of classes, you often have plenty of time for stuff like that.
