I live in Montana and wondered what is the best way to get my stuff to Boston. Is it best to send it by freight in advance, fedex it or something, or pay the extra fee to ship it by plane with me when I head out there? I’ve been trying to weight the ups and downs and it all but my ignorance keeps getting in my way, so hopefully you fine people will be able to help me! Thanks.

i live in washington and i think im just gonna probably fedex of mail it

Take as much as you can on the airplane. Are you going with a parent? Then you can take four big pieces of luggage. I suggest taking LESS rather than more clothes. You can always buy some or have it shipped later if you need them. There's a Bed Bath & Beyond nearby, and you can order bedding either on-line or at your home BBB and pick it up at the Boston store. Bedding is the bulkiest item to bring.
Remember most airlines charge extra if a piece of luggage weighs more than 50 pounds.

Smartmovers.com is a very good choice to use. They allow you to ship items to school and will hold them for you until you arrive. They have semi-trucks parked in front of each of the large dorms and that's where they hold your items so it's a very convenient pick-up. Smartmovers is also one of the companies that you will probably use, if you are planning on storing some boxes over the summer breaks. Just go the that web-site and click on Ship-to-School. They will send you all the boxes you need, and pre-paid labels that you put on the boxes when you are ready to send.

My experience with these people has been catastrophic. First, they delivered boxes shipped home at the end of last school year from my daughter's school to the wrong address. A few days ago, they failed to deliver a very large number of stored boxes to returning students at Andover, including my daughter. They don't asnwer their phone, except with a voicemail that says "The mailbox is full." Today, one day late, they started to deliver some of the missing boxes, but many students, including my daughter, still haven't gotten their stored goods. My understanding is that Andover has advised them that they will not use them any longer.

Oh bkozloff, I agree with you. I forgot that I had posted this back in July, and it wasnt until late aug that I ran into the same trouble that you are in. Here at Boston University, smartmovers virutally colapsed. I myself was without boxes that I had stored over the summer, for 5 days, and slept on a towel for 3 days, since my bedding was in those boxes. Finally, smartmovers, was fired from BU halfway through their distribution, so BU sent over their own trucks to the warehouse and picked up the boxes themselves. I wasnt suprised when I opened one of the boxes and my flat panel tv which was wrapped in its original box, then in rolls and rolls of bubble wrap, was cracked, it looked like the damn box was run over by the T, luckily I had insurance, but has that worked, i think not. Since I got my boxes last week, i have yet to hear back from the company about the insurance and how to make a claim. So again, please forget what I said back in July, do not even think about using this company, they used to be reliable, but have turned into a waste of time.
