I'm moving in for summer be on the 27th! Does anyone know how this works?

Go to the front desk in the area you will be living in.

Present your ID.

Your gator one will be scanned to check you in.

You get you keys and slide card. You sign for them.

The RA/DA will explain the room condition form (RCF). You read over and sign.
6 Your done.

Hey ASMAJ, do you get a real key, or are they electronic like a hotel?

A slide card to get in your building and floor and then a real key to get into your room.

Is it generally really packed on the first day plus carrying all of your stuff up the stairs and stuff? I just don't know what to expect.

Yea, it's usually pretty busy with all the parents there helping out their kids. But I thought it was a pretty smooth move-in, nothing to be stressed about.

My son moved into Jennings for Summer B in 2006. We got there about a half-hour before they told us they'd open. They allowed people to park along the curb in front of Jennings (Museum Rd?), and they allowed people to park in the driveway that runs along the side of Jennings. It's the long driveway that leads to the parking lot in back of Jennings.

A line of parents and students formed on the sidewalk in front of Jennings' front door. They opened the door right on time, and we were led to a table set up inside the door. The line moved quickly. After my son got his card key, we walked up to see where his room was located, so we could decide which doorway was the closest to his room and our car. After that, the move went pretty quickly. We went out to lunch after completing the move, and when we returned, some of the parking spaces were empty. So it looked like most people moved in at the opening time.

And as ASMAJ mentioned, you'll get a form to fill out, to report the condition of your room. That's because when you check out at the end of the semester, your RA will inspect your room for damage. We put things on the list like: the door was full of holes, as if someone had been throwing darts at it. The paint was peeling badly on the closet doors. There were big dents on the legs of my son's bed. One of the large screw handles that you use to open the windows was missing. There were a few other things that I forget, but the point is that you don't want to get blamed for any damage that you didn't cause. If you have a room with carpeting, be sure to report any stains in the carpet.

We wanted to bring only one car for the move, and didn't want to have to rent a U-Haul, so we only moved what was absolutely necessary, and what we could fit in my SUV. We live only 2-1/2 hours from Gainesville, so I drove up the next week with a small chest of drawers, some extra linens and pillows, etc. On weekends, you can park in the parking spaces without a student parking pass. On weekdays before 5:00 pm, they'll ticket you if you park without a parking sticker.

If you're moving into one of the other dorms, I'd suggest you find the dorm on a campus map so you can get a feel for the layout. Call the Housing Dept., and ask them ahead of time where you will be permitted to park. (When son moved into Broward for Fall Semester, we were allowed to park on the lawn in front of the dorm.) Maybe you could plan it out with your parents, so it doesn't add to the stress of the day.

It's so exciting--best of luck to all of you!

To be honest usually the RA doesn't care unless its something major (e.g broken chair or window) or you live in a renovated dorm (i.e Muphree, RYMAC area). The only think they are looking for it that you swipe the floor before you leave and there is not trash in any of the draws. The reason why is because the RA has to clean/sweep all the stuff up if its left. Plus all residents should just HAWK something if its broken and the maintenance staff will fix it.

Be careful with Hume, they were giving tickets to some of the cars at Hume last summer.

Did he enjoy his time?

Some advice, don't get an attitude with the staff (senior clerk, RA, DA) because they will 1. work slower 2. will not be as helpful as they can 3. remember what you did for later reference.

As a reminder, Jennings/ Rawlings has elevators. Only RA and senior clerk has keys to them. You only get one trip up during move in day (unless you find an RA will to help). Murphree Area does not have elevators, so bring some water and a happy attitude. Springs and Lakeside/Keys (I believe) have an elevator that students can use on there own.

where were the parking tickets written near Hume?

Not sure. I think some people were parked where they were blocking the flow of traffic.

He really did like his summer in Jennings, ASMAJ. And he also liked Broward, too. We were lucky because in both dorms, his room was right near a stairway leading to our parked car. And he was on the 2nd floor in both dorms, too, so we didn't have to climb 3 or 4 flights of stairs.

Room 239 in Broward is just three doors away from the stairs that lead to the front lawn next to Burger King and Broward Dining. We were allowed to park the car on the lawn right in front of that stairway.

He was in Room 206 in Jennings, right next to the staircase that leads out to the driveway next to the dorm. For move-in day, we were parked in front of the building. But on the weekends we went up to visit, we parked in the driveway right near the stairway. I'm just telling you all the room numbers so that if your room numbers are close to his, you'll get an idea of where to try and park, and which staircases to use.

Also, we know someone who lived on the 2nd floor in Rawlings last year. They moved everything in through the front door, and walked up a flight of stairs with it all. Afterwards, they discovered that there's an entrance on the left side of the building that is on the same level as her room! If they'd known that ahead of time, they wouldn't have had to lug everything up a flight of stairs. You might want to check it out of you're living in Rawlings next fall. Hope this helps.

Its up to you. If you move in early in the day on the first day then its going to be packed. If you come later in the day or later that week then its going to be less busy.

Okay I know you the doors wont open till noon on Wed. but what about Friday? What time can I check in then.
