moving in

how is everyone bringing all their stuff...my dad told me to get suitcases but i tihnk thats a waste of money and space..i think boxes will be sufficient

Bring suitcases just for your clothes. Use boxes for everything else.

I hope I get there before my roommate so I choose a side and move in peacefully. I think it would be a little awkward moving in with him there in the room.

Frasi, Have you been in touch with your roomie?
At my older son's school, everyone in the suite has to be there before anyone can "claim" anything.

I believe out of state students can move in a day before in state ones.

Yes, OOS students AND their roommates move in the 24th. Everyone else is the 25th.

oh, you are correct. I remember that with my s. His roommate was from PA and we are from NY so we were sure he would get there first but I think he still did not move in until the next day.

WHA??

what are you guys talking about? OOS move in sooner? But what happens if the roomate(like my situation) is from instate? Surely he can decide to move a day later if he so prefers, right?

UPDATE: I see, it looks like that only applies to oos first year students, though, and I am a returning student. But i do believe that I am registered as an international student, does anyone know if I am allowed to move in earlier in this case?

1mom- We exchanged emails once, but that was about it. Nothing much to discuss, I don't plan on bringing any major electronics, and neither does he.

rlm, what city is your son from and is he looking for a job back in NY now?

We are from upstate and no, he is not looking for a job in NY. He got a great job in another state, which is what he wanted. (NY taxes too high)

Is your roommate a first year? If so I think you can move in whatever day he does. Otherwise I think you are correct, you move in with other returning students.

No, but i wonder if I can just show up there one day early-- I don't they are not going to send me home to NY, and other people are moving in anyway, so...

OOS and those from Centre County and their roommates are supposed to move in on the 24th. Actually, anyone can move in on the 24th, but I believe there may be an extra charge to get your room key early in you are instate. I know several instate kids who are moving in on the 24th; we are moving my D in on the 25th so we don't have to take a day off work. Get there early, because I've heard the traffic is murder.

I'm moving in super early and it's something like $16 a day every day that you're there before the 23rd or 24th, I don't remember.

does anyone have a link with the fee for those who want to go a day early?

http://www.hfs.psu.edu/housing/contactus/. I think the Friday move-in date is for 1st semester freshman. Aren't you a second semester student? I'm not sure, but you may not be able to move in on Friday. I'd call them. Maybe they give out special exceptions.

Call res life and explain that you want to move in early. They'll let you stay in temp housing in East for that fee. If you're not living in East, you have to make an appointment with your residence area separately to move your stuff into your room (but you still have to live in East temp housing before the regular move-in day). I don't have a specific link or number to give you, my job (the reason why I'm moving in so early) took care of it all for me.
