moving into dorms fall 2011

Hi

I am an OOSer moving into the dorms for Fall 2011 (don't know which one yet). I see the dorms open on 8/19/11. I kind of have to plan when I move in so I am curious as to when other freshmen move in and what goes on between physically moving in and the first day of classes. I don't want to get there on Friday and then find out people don't move in until Monday. Being an OOSer, I'm hoping there are "activities" in the dorm to help break the ice and meet people. Can't help it but I'm a little nervous...can you tell?

Thanks

I don’t have any real advice, but remember, practically everyone is incredibly nervous. Just be friendly and I’m sure the anxiety will pass.

I’m from OOS too and I will move in as early as I’m allowed to. I really liked UT when I visited and even if only a few people are around, I’d love to walk around the campus and absorb it all in before the college workload hits me like a brick wall.

I’m sure many people will try to move in as early as possible because everyone wants to make friends and meet people before classes start if they can.

Your resident assistant would surely have some ice breakers and get-together events to let you get to know your floor-mates during the first week.

I second moving in as early as possible! So that you can get acquainted with your surroundings of UT and Austin. Make sure to keep a map on hand or else there’s a UT app if you have an iphone that also has it.

Don’t worry. Everyone was nervous. Or at least I was nervous in the beginning. Give yourself some space to adapt and you’ll be fine. :)

I know band people get there a couple weeks early along with some other programs. It’ll be pretty much dead then but you’ll find that the weekend before, people will pour in FAST. Everyone is a little antsy but the nervousness will wear off pretty quickly. A plus to moving in early is that you get to pick your bed first and get a feel for campus and sleeping on a pretty stiff bed (if you’re in Jester DEFINITELY buy padding of some sort). There will be tons to do and plenty of people to meet.
Everyone will be VERY friendly because everyone is looking to make friends. People will be sitting down next to strangers at lunch and dinner and almost every conversation you hear will be people introducing themselves. Get to know your neighbors, meet up with acquaintances from orientation etc. While at orientation there will be a lot of ice-breaking stuff, I don’t remember there being too much at the start of the semester but I guess that could vary by RA.

DUDE yes.

If you’re going to have a roommate (most likely, yes), get there EARLIER than them. Get first dibs on everything! Top bunk/bottom bunk, closet, desk, half of the room, etc.!!

Yes, this was my biggest win in moving here earlier.

Next year I won’t have a roommate. Chyeah! :D

There will be organized activities available on campus and in the dorm over the weekend.
