I would appreciate any advice from OOS parents who have moved a child out of a dorm and into storage for the summer. Is it something that the student can do by his/herself without a parent flying down? Any recommendations on storage units? Thanks

There are many storage facilities in the area. Just call a few and find one that fits size-wise and price-wise. Also look to see how you can pay…autopay, etc…

Google Tuscaloosa storage and you’ll get lots of hits.

Some are climate controlled and some aren’t.

I always “bug spray” the storage unit before placing things inside, getting the floors, corners, doorway, etc.

Your child may be able to do this by himself, depends on whether he has a friend who can help him drive his stuff over there.

Make sure items are clean/laundered. Strong black garbage bags can work well for bedding stuff (pillows, comforters, blankets, etc)…again, the stuff needs to be clean! We’ve actually used strong black bags for many items…towels, clothing, etc. As long as the bags are a heavy gauge, they’ve worked very well and we just stack them on top of each other in the unit.

A silver/gray Sharpie can be used to write the contents on the black bags.

There were some suggestions in this thread:

Also sometimes you can get a good deal on ‘space bags’. They’re a lot more affordable than they used to be and I have several I use at home for bedding, etc. I also know several people that use them for travel. They keep out bugs, dirt, water, and GREATLY reduce the space you need to store stuff.
