I am a freshman in a community college (19) in the state of Georgia. I will be moving to California on my own (my parents will remain in Georgia or possibly move to Alabama). I want to continue school ofcourse but there is no way i can afford out of state tuition.
If i attend a community college in California does anyone know if maybe I’ll get enough financial aid to cover school (currently financial aid says parents can’t contribute to my education so i get PLENTY for in state community college in GA)?
Does anyone know if maybe i can do online classes for my community college in GA while living in CA. than transfer those credits to a college in CA once i meet in state tuition?
Or does anyone just have plain suggestions that’ll help me out?
More info:
Major is currently nursing
Wouldn’t like to leave school for more than a semester honestly.
Also if anyone knows how to qualify for in state tuition in CA. (Other than being a resident for a year & having to show that I’ve been independent from my parents for like two years)
No. You are not a resident. You don’t qualify for ANY state funding. Non-residents do not receive any financial aid because you have not paid into California State taxes. If you immediately start taking coursework, you will establish yourself as attending for educational purposes and you will pay full fees for every California school you attempt to attend in the future.
You can do all the online classes you want in GA, but the California schools don’t have to accept them. Oh, you wont get instate tuition if your parents are not California residents.
Nursing is impacted at the popular CSUs. Your OOS transcript will immediately be scrutinized. There is a cap on OOS students. Local students have priority.
Rents run $2k per month in Southern California. How will you afford that? You will be required to pay market rates and cannot receive help from anyone. The residency offices will require proof of paid state taxes on the 540 tax forms and a budget with rent receipts, that matches your W2 forms. The residency offices know all of the tricks. You need to work full-time for 2 years, without using or attending a state funded school. That is IF you can find a full time job. Some little part time job is not going to pay your rent, utilities, food, transportation, and health fees.
Most students cannot keep up with the costs and return home.
This is really a bad plan. Advice: finish your degree in Georgia. Visit California later.
essentially, you will need to move here as a non-student, establish residency - about a year as an independent person. of a year, then enroll in a CC as a ‘resident’ I’d also add, Nursing in CA is CRAZY competitive. Even non-impacted CSUs like Channel Islands require a really strong transcript. Honestly, you are probably better served staying in GA, then moving here after you graduate.
