I'm applying to UNC Chapel Hill this year and I realize that UNC, like every other state college, prefers in-state students over out-of-state ones. I read somewhere that UNC chapel hill makes sure that about 18% of those accepted are out of state. I currently live in Maine, but I am moving to North Carolina within the next 6 months. Do you think the UNC admissions team would treat me like an in state student because of that fact?

From the website:

Under North Carolina law, to qualify for in-state tuition for a given term for a given term you must prove:

* that you established your domicile in North Carolina twelve months before the first day of classes for that term, and
- that you have maintained that domicile for at least twelve continuous months.

No you have to have lived here for one year.
