moving unfurnished, tips?

How does one get by buying furniture and other things without a car in Boston?

I'm moving into an apartment after an expensive year of living in IV and I'm racking my brain over logistics...my parents aren't coming with me and renting a car is out of the question, so does anyone have any tips? Thank you!

I would probably try to buy everything from places that will deliver furniture… I’ve had my mattress and dresser delivered (target, ikea, most big stores will do it), and some craigslisters will deliver things.

Usually if I need smaller things like nightstands, lamps, rugs, etc., I’ll just go to the fenway BBB and take a cab home.

Once you turn 21, there’s always zipcar memberships (I have it, love it, makes my life way easier for things like moving and buying furniture), and in-city uhaul is reasonably priced.

If you can find a way to get to the Ikea in Stoughton if you buy everything in-store you can take it over to the delivery place and they’ll deliver next day usually for $69. There’s still that problem of getting to the Ikea in the first place, but you could take the commuter rail and then a cab or bring your bike or something.

Or you could hunt craigslist for furniture that people are willing to deliver. They usually charge $15-20 more if they’ll bring it to you but it’s usually worth it.

Yeah, I was thinking that the huge problem with Ikea is how far away it is. :/

I didn’t know that you can get a zipcar membership at 21! I’ve always thought it was 25; I have friends who are turning 21 and maybe I could get them to rent a car then.

Thanks guys!

I’m lucky- my parents are sappy so they decided to help me move into my new place this fall and are bringing their truck, which to be honest is slightly more important to me.
