in response to the recent articles about the riaa sueing college students over illegal downloads, i'm a bit worried. i know many people do it, but i'm just wondering how these kids got caught out of all the people. i kno people who routinely use p2p file sharing software like limewire, kazaa, etc. and they fill their ipods with thousands of songs they download. i'm thinkin that there is a big possibility they could get caught with the 15,000+ songs theyve downloaded. do any of your colleges address this issue and have yall downloaded many songs from these file sharing systems or is it just a small percentage of your music collection?

Supposedly p2p sites do not work on our school network. I have yet to test this, but there is a good chance you will at the very least get sent a letter of warning from the university if you do so here. (Boston College)

I use ruckus: ruckus.com. 100% free, legal music for college students.

My school addresses it in the rules and regulations. You can definitely get caught, but I don't know how common it is.

I occasionally download some MP3's from Limewire.. haven't been caught yet. Of course, I don't download like crazy like I did back at home. Maybe 5 songs a week at most.

das8929 you're definitely going to get caught.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING WHEN YOU ARE USING THE COLLEGE'S NETWORK. THEY TRACK EVERY THING YOU DO AND YES THEY KNOW YOU'RE WATCHING PORN.

You'll end up begging your college to find a way to get yourself out of the trouble you got in once a production company or a record label sends you a unfriendly letter.

I'm not joking, guys don't be dumb. Just get a external hard drive and go around your dorm and take music and videos from others.

Hahahahaha. Maybe if you go to BJU or something, but at any college that isn't insane A) they don't care about you watching porn and B) the odds of you getting caught, while real, are very small. Look at the percentage of people who get caught compared to how many do it. Just use Ruckus then use something else to take the DRM off of it, or use http downloads. You WILL NOT get caught using http downloads.

What are HTTP downloads? The ones from Google? I do that and I don't think I'll get caught... aren't they mostly going after people who share as well as download?

Don't use a P2P. HTTP downloads are not an issue as someone said earlier.

They don't catch you downloading, they catch you uploading. So if you're never uploading you're safe.

How about...don't steal music?

Yes, because Metallica will really be hurting if you download Enter Sandman. They've only sold 100 million albums, after all.

i'm pretty sure that the IT department at your school doesn't really care about your internet traffic unless you're looking up recipes for bombs, looking at child pornography, or probably the most common thing...if you go over your school's bandwidth limits or your traffic indicates constant high volume traffic, especially uploading. first and foremost...know you school's policies. also, try and see if other people at your school have had success. then after that, just cap your download and upload bandwidth, be smart and don't go crazy with the downloads, and when possible...

...buy the CD :D being a musician and casual music engineer, i try my hardest to support artists, especially independent artists. but sometimes it just isn't practical, especially when i'm spending enough money on food, apartment supplies (gotta have toilet paper), school supplies, and rent...

As an experienced downloader, I can attest that the poster who said they'll only catch you if you'er uploading is correct, from personal experience. This means that BitTorrent is basically out, but if uploads are turned off in Limewire, the person running the client is highly unlikely to be caught.
