Hi, I’m a dental surgeon from India. I have completed my Bachelor’s this year. I wanted to know what are my chances of getting into a good university for MPH(Global Health) in the United States? I have a clinical experience of 3years ( 2 years during the degree + 1 year internship at a dental hospital) . I have persistently done well in the academics, and attended dental health camps in the rural areas during the last two years of my BDS. I graduated this month, and now am preparing for the GRE and TOEFL. I’ll be taking the tests this October so that I could apply in the Fall Session. I want some suggestion on what are the best schools for doing MPH in Global Health? And some guidance on how can I build a better profile, because I really want to get into one of the best schools. Thanks.
MPH programs aren’t that difficult to get into, especially if you already have a clinical degree and some experience (although experience during the academic program doesn’t count as much - some programs want to see some post-graduate experience). If you get decently high GRE scores (150s+) and have a good GPA from your dental program, you should be ok.
Good schools for global health are Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Tulane, Harvard, Emory, George Washington, and Boston U; other excellent MPH programs are at Michigan, UCLA, Berkeley, University of Washington, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Yale (they also may be great at global health - I just don’t know for sure).
Thanks for your time Juillet. If the clinical experience during the course doesn’t really count then will my 1 year experience be enough? Or should I take my GRE and TOEFL tests as I have planned, but apply to good universities next year, after working at a dental hospital for another year?
It’s not that it doesn’t count - it’s that it doesn’t count as much as full-time, post-grad school experience. But yes, I think your experience should be enough. I’d apply selectively to some great programs and see what happens.
Oh! All right then. I’ll see to it. Thanks
