MPulse... worth trying out next year?

Hi! I am new on CC and I am almost 100% positive I want to major in MT in college. Michigan is my dream school and i am very interested in applying for the MPulse MT workshop. I’m going to be a sophomore next year and I know its pretty rare for them to accept soph girls… so i guess my question is: is it worth it to audition next year? or am i better off waiting until jr year? Also, if by some CRAZY chance i was accepted next year, would i be able to be considered for the program for junior year also? thanks so much!

As you noted, mPulse does not take sophomores often but its worthy trying. The experience of preparing the audition materials and application whether accepted or not is a good one. If you don’t get accepted as a sophomore, try again the following year. I have not heard of anyone attending the program for 2 years. If you were to get in as a sophomore, I would recommend trying another school or program or really focusing on college audition prep the summer after your junior year. Also, keep an open mind to all the other great programs out there. There is loads of info about good summer programs on CC. I think any of the on campus programs are great to do to give you a feel for different types of college campuses, getting to know some of the faculty at that school, seeing what its like to study MT all day every day, etc… Good luck!

It is rare for them to accept sophomore girls, but some do get in. If you don’t you can always apply the next year. I don’t know if you can do it twice. But, doing Mpulse doesn’t really help your chance of getting into Michigan for college since they take very few Mpulse students. In fact, they are known to accept students into the college program that were rejected to Mpulse more than once.

Whether or not you try for mpulse- I strongly recommend doing a college summer program. If my D was doing it all over again I know that is something she would change. She did one (at NYU, which is where she ended up) wished she could have done others too, for admissions but really for the feel of the programs.

My D applied both MT and straight Drama Sophomore year, and was accepted for straight Drama which was a great experience. The MT kids started a little later, but she got to know several, and would help kids with choreography after hours in the lobby of the dorm. She decided she wanted to experience a different, longer term program after Jr. year, but really loved MPulse!

We know a girl who did MPulse both her sophomore and junior summers (didn’t end up at UMich), so at least in the past it could be done, though that was four years ago. We also know someone who did MPulse their sophomore summer and then Cherubs their junior summer and decided to apply ED to Northwestern, so IMHO it’s a great idea to try out multiple programs if that’s an option, since you will learn things about what type of college experience you may prefer. D loved MPulse, but it helped her decide she preferred a larger program and one with the option of adding more academics, so even doing a single program can help focus your thinking about what you want from college.

Best of luck to you!!

thanks for all the advice!

I’ll only add that there were 3 sophomore girls last year. Couldn’t agree more with previous posts to try other programs (if you can) to gain perspective and confirm what feels right for you. Mpulse is an outstanding opportunity, but by no means an indicator of admission. So far (to our knowledge) only a few from last year’s group will be attending Michigan, although many are headed to other ‘top’ programs. Good-luck!!
