What's the difference between MS of Accountancy and MS of Taxation? If I want to be a tax attorney, which one would be better?

Depends on the school and the program. Some MS in Accy seem much more oriented towards giving non-accy majors all the classes they need to get their CPA’s. I believe UIUC has a MsAcc for such people and a MAS(Masters in Accounting Science) for those with BBA’s majoring in accounting. UT has a MPA(Masters in Public Accounting). My school has a joint program where you get a BBA/MSAcc…aside from an advanced accounting course, ethics, and I think business law you can take any accounting electives you want. That means you can take half a dozen tax courses or half a dozen audit related courses or some mix.

Your really ought to check the website of the school you are looking at and see how it relates to your own experience. If you’ve got a BBA in Accounting then it might be good for you, I don’t know. You should probably wait for taxguy since he’s got a J.D. and can probably tell you. I think some tax attorneys go the J.D/LL.M route and learn about the tax code in depth during the LL.M part. If you are going that route and accumulating debt you probably should just get to it rather than accumulate a big pile in advance by getting an MS in Tax.

Anyway, I’m no expert but I think if you want the best advice from those that really know, you should tell us what you’ve got your bachelor’s in.
