MS classes, gpa on HS transcript

Middle school grades are not included on HS transcript at my local public schools.

No HS work done in MS appears on our transcripts. D did Algebra I in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th, and entered 9th grade at the equivalent of Spanish IV.

It’s seems this varies by states and districts.

One of my sons got a C in a high school science class taken in 8th grade, and that grade is included in his high school GPA.

This means that he had a black mark against him even before begining freshman year in high school.

While certain colleges may overlook it if they take the time to realize that it was a MS course, most colleges will just look at GPA and not necessarily think about what year each class was taken.

S2 had two years of HS math and two years of HS FL in middle school. Those 7 Bs and 1 A were included in his GPA, and cost him about .1 point on the UW GPA. OTOH, tackling those courses in MS were crucial prerequisites for getting into the IB program he attended.

S1 had on his HS transcript a course taken when he was 10 yo.

The transcripts here do group together all HS courses taken in middle school and label them as such, so at least the colleges can see and choose to exclude, place less weight, etc.

Yes, for instance, for merit aid, our state school used to specify unweighted GPA in core courses (English, math, science, social studies and foreign language) taken in grades 9-11. I was relieved that my son’s 8th grade algebra I grade was not factored in.

My D had Algebra I, Geometry and 2 years of Spanish from middle school that went on her hs transcripts and counted towards her GPA.

Over here middle school classes show up on the transcript–but as pass/fail; they aren’t factored into the GPA. I believe they do count as credit towards graduation, though.

At our local high school, high school classes taken in middle school DO appear on the transcript and DO count in GPA.

Because my daughter started public school in 9th grade, all those classes show up as transfer credits in her first semester of 9th grade. It makes for a very odd looking transcript.

We asked if they HAD to appear and were told yes, because they appeared for kids who had been in public school all along.

As someone who failed every class but yearbook in the eighth grade, I can safely say that putting any middle school grades in the HS GPA is a terrible idea. HS would cease to be a fresh start and those who did poorly in Middle School would already be at a significant disadvantage.

High school level classes taken in middle school are not reflected on the high school transcript and the grades are not considered in the GPA in our district.

I don’t know if they appear on the transcript, since I have never looked, but MS classes do not figure into HS GPA here. With the intense competition with weighted grades, it would be difficult to do, since MS grades do not have the weighting that honors classes at the HS do. My D also took French I, Alg I and Geometry in MS; most kids here take at least Alg I and a first year language in 8th grade, so I don’t look at them as HS classes at all - they are MS classes. However, neither PA nor our district has any requirements of 4 years of math, science, or foreign language in HS that the kids need to fulfill.

HS level classes taken in MS (i.e. foreign language, Algebra & Geometry) are included on the HS transcript and factored into HS GPA. There is an option to expunge a MS grade in a HS class and take the class over. Some people do this if their child does not get an A in the class.
