MS Computer Engineering

Hi all,

What do you think of my chances in getting into the following schools for an MS in Computer Engineering?

Stanford
MIT
Harvard
CMU

Here are my credentials:
BS in Computer Engineering
Boston University (GPA: 3.92/4.00)
GRE: 800Q (94%) / 540V (71%) /4.0W (37%)

I'm also a TA for a few classes and member of TBP and EKN honor societies. Also, have some work experience (3 internships)...don't know if that matters.

Anyway...let me know what you think; judging by past admission results, do you think I will be able to get in?

Thanks!

Obviously you have a very good chance at all those schools... And if you aren't applying for financial aid with that MS, I'd guess you are practically a shoe-in at all of those places. But even if not, your chances are still very good.

Thanks! I've read in some previous posts that Stanford/MIT only take 3.8 GPA's, so I was a little worried about the realatively low verbal and writing scores on my GRE. Plus, my personal statement probably isn't that great (see writing score). I think if I get into the a top school like Stanford or MIT, I wouldn't mind paying the tuition. It would only be for a year or two right?

That 3.8 might be a good guideline for a PhD candidate, but a MS can get by with less. With a 3.92 you are doing great.

In some of the applications I've filled out there has been a question "can you afford full tuition if no financial aid is given?" Make sure to mark yes. To even increase your chances further, just don't apply for financial aid at all. Graduate school admin is not blind to need like undergrad admin is.

I didn't really pay attention to your writing score the first time around, but yes it is sort of low (the verbal doesn't matter as much). But with everything else so good, I think you will be fine.

I just took a quick look at all my submitted applications. I didn't see the "can you afford full tuition if no financial aid is given?" question anywhere, so hopefully everything will be OK. However, I did say I'd take any financial aid if given to me (can't turn that down).

Thanks again, Battlefrog. Out of curiousity, are you currently in graduate school, all done, or applying like me?

Stanford and a lot of the CS schools out there will not fund Masters people anyways, only Ph.D. candidates. You can only get limited funding as a course assistant after getting in, which is pretty competitive.

I'm applying. I just graduated with my BS this month, and I have a great EE job waiting for me in Maryland. My employer will pay for an MSEE in full, so I'm definitely going to take advantage of that! Downside is that I can only apply to schools in the DC/Maryland/VA area. So if I don't get into either Hopkins or UMD College Park, I'm gonna be bummed. I'm also applying to George Washington University, but I really don't know if I would go there. I'm thinking it might be better to just wait a year and try again to get into UMD or Hopkins. But hopefully I won't need to do that. :)
