MSB Interview!!

I have my Gtown interview with an alumna on Thursday (two days!!) and I’m reallllyyy nervous because the only other interviews I’ve had were really informal and Georgetown is my first choice. I know there have been a bunch of similar threads, but if you don’t mind, could you answer any or all of the following questions based on your knowledge/ experience?

What should I wear? (i’m a girl) On the phone she mentioned dressing casual…

What types of questions do they ask for MSB? I literally talked with my Wash U interviewer for about 5 minutes about the weather. And Cornell it was basically just me asking questions…

How long does the whole interview last? If you had one, how long was yours?

I’m meeting at her house… should I bring anything? A handbag? A folder with my application/transcript?

What are some good questions to ask?

Can the interview significantly hurt your chances of being accepted? Significantly help?

Anything else you think I should know about Georgetown interviews, esp. for the business school?

THANK YOU GUYS! You are incredible… haha seriously i don’t know what i would do without youuu… :)

Don't stress out about it. My interviewer was really nice and wasn't too intimidating. I wore a nice skirt and blouse (just dress casual like she said). My interview lasted about 45 mins. For the first half he basically asked me questions about what I wanted to study, why I wanted to go there, about my activities inside and outside school... you know questions like that. But for the second half I asked him questions and he talked. I think the interview only counts for a small percentage like 5% or so, so don't worry because if you screw up it can't hurt too badly! Good luck!

Thanks Andi! :)

Were you prepared to talk about specific classes? Because I definitely didn't think to do that but maybe I should. Was yours for the business school, and if so, did they ask you any business-specific questions?

I consider a skirt and blouse pretty dressed up... I think I might just stick with a pair of jeans, a blazer, and ballet flats... do you think that's okay?

haha I'm retarded for being so nervous, I just want to go to georgetown soooo badlyyy... oy. good luck everyone!!

I would say choose dressier pants than jeans...I wore either khakis or navy blue pants.

Mine was for MSB...We didn't really talk about business beyond the fact that I was applying for the school. It's really just your basic college interview, no curveballs.

The interviewer can only help you. Don't be nervous, just be confident. Make sure he/she knows that Georgetown is your first choice and give legit reasons.

awesome, thanks cny!! that actually is the best thing anyone could have told me... because I was nervous she was going to drill me on all I know about business and marketing (the major I applied to) and to be honest, I don't know all that much, I'm only in high school...

I will definitely take your advice though, thanks againn!

Trust me, I feel like I don't know anything more about business than how it's spelled (I spelled it correctly, right?) and I've applied to the business school every place I've applied.

My outfit wasn't too dressy. Like cny06 said, I would also suggest wearing dressier pants than jeans.

I applied to the college (the language department) so one of the questions he asked me was "Okay so you're applying for a spot that only 2 out of every 10 people get. If you could tell the admissions committee anything you wanted that wasn't on your app what would you tell them?" I was so nervous that I thought I blew the whole thing in answering that question. But I guess not because I got in!

To show that you're interested, look up some classes, clubs, or activities that you would want to take or join. It shows that you've really researched the school and are really considering it. Also if you've visited gtown, bring up your visit. In my interview somehow he brought up the graveyard by the dorms and since I had visited the school we were able to talk about that and the campus and such.

don't worry! my interviewer said that I could "dress casual" and i even asked if i could wear jeans, jokingly of course, and he even said yes (he was really laid back though- an arts teacher). i showed up in khakis and a polo, and he was just in a casual pair of slacks and a t-shirt

as for msb- i applied to msb also, but he didn't ask any specific questions-
only why do you want to study business, etc.

all in all, it was very relaxed, and not at all intimidating. good luck!

cny- i loovee you hahah you have no idea how much better you just made me feel

andi- that also makes me really happy! i just want my interviewer to see that i love the school... even if i don't sound perfectly articulate and don't know everything there is to know about business, hopefully i can still make a good impression. i've visited the school about 6 times b/c my brother went to gtown and i visited twice this year... so i should mention that probably

collegeohmy- that's really good that he didn't ask business-specific questions... ahh crazy to think we could be in the same school/ taking the same classes next year!! i'm so glad yours wasn't intimidating, was it at his apt?

ok my new outfit (feel free to tell me what you guys think haha) is going to be: gray "slacks" or nice pants or whatever you wanna call them (haha i think that's the first time i've ever used the word slacks), a white shirt with a black blazer over it, black ballet flats, and my coat... and i dont think i'm gonna bring a bag or my application w/ me (she didn't ask for it) b/c i don't really have a bag that looks professional enough...

I brought my resume with me, which made me feel a bit more comfortable because my interviewer would look at my resume and ask me questions about my activities--it was nice because i wasn't racking my brain thinking of things!
also, just a tip, if your interviewer asks you if you want something to drink, say yes! i said no, and i was SO thirsty halfway through from talking.
anyway, good luck! your outfit sounds really good--"power clothes"--let us know how it goes.

You know, that's a really good idea MGS... haha maybe I'll just carry a folder with me-- like a really plain one, with a copy of my resume and maybe my application. Then I can just hand it to her when I get there... k, that is a good idea... I'll ask for water. Thanks for the advice! :)

Ya bring your resume. I brought my transcript but he said he didn't need it and kept my resume. For another interview I wrote down a bunch of questions that I had about the school and social life. That helped a lot because when you're in a situation like that you sometimes can't remember everything that you wanted to say.

Outfit sounds great btw.

bring a breath mint and a bottle of water. seriously.

Andi- That's a really good idea about writing down questions, I think I'll do that just in case... haha

booptrop- I'm gonna take Tums before so I don't have a problem similar to yours, hahahahha... and I like the breath mint and bottle of water idea. But now I just need to bring a bag that looks professional enough... hmm...

Ok does this match at allll: dark gray "slacks" (haha second time ever using the word), white shirt, black blazer, black ballet flats, but OVER that, my navy blue wool coat and brown longchamp bag? ehhh... I hate black/navy together, and also black/brown. omg why am I looking so into this haha it's not like she's going to judge me on how well I can dress myself!

just make sure you look ironed and neat, have great hair, and nothing stuck on your teeth.

Keep in mind you may have your coat off before you meet your interviewer and your bag may be hidden under the table the whole time. Don't sweat the small stuff. Also, breathe. ;-)

GOOD LUCK! You'll do great!

Oh--remember a firm, confident handshake. And speak clearly and not too fast!

haha I LOVE YOU GUYS. I don't know why I freak out about these things... It's just scary to think that my future could be determined by this one interview. I seriously love these tips though, I'm going to re-read them all before I go for my interview on Thursday! :)
